I have recently discovered the joy of shooting in 24p but have some pulldown-related questions. FYI – I edit with FCP HD and Vegas Video 4 and output for broadcast at 29.97.

Should I be shooting in 24p (2:3) or 24p advanced (2:3:3:2)? Are there pros and cons to either format? Is one better for high-motion footage and the other for low-motion? Will either affect my ability to edit? I’ve noticed some stuttering during dissolves from 2:3 pulldown work and figured out not to have Vegas remove the plldown before editing. There are so many different combinations of uses for 24p that I’m confused by it all! Any help is appreciated…

If you haven’t already done so, I’d suggest checking the white paper pdf from Sony. As I recall, it deals with the issues you’re talking about.

I am getting very good results shooting 60i–then converting to 24fps in Vegas 6.0—–I believe that its almost as good as straight 24fps—

Thanks for the white paper link. I’m struggling to figure this out too. I’m converting from 24p to 29.97p. Is there a way to, instead of [2, 3], do [2, a mix of two frames, 2]? If I frame-through DVD movies, this is the phenominon I see.

Or does it not matter? I.e., it’s too subtle for viewers to pick up?

There was an enhancement in Vegas 6 that gives you even better results than before. Especially so if you lock your shutter speed to 1/60th.

if you want to render out 24p DVD’s/web and edit at 24fps then shoot ADVANCED pulldown. 24pA is very easy to pull out the extra 5th frame and edit 24p in the Time line … you can then render out 24p DVD’s .. for going back to tape render out using normal pull down. 24pA was created to make pull down EASY ( fake every 5th frame created). 24pA is not as smooth as normal pull down but again Advanced was always meant to be removed …

Just got back from NAB. Everything changed with Vegas 6 for hdv. Shoot in 1080i. Set up 24p project in Vegas. It now does a perfect pulldown. I saw beautiful footage rolled out frame by frame, no artifacts.
