It comes down to the fact that you are making them smaller in size most the time (like for photos)… so it does allow you to zoom in on them, but that quality loss is going to be there most of the time. You can experiment with the sizes of the graphics for better results. The less you change their size from 100% in FCP, the better they’ll look. i.e., scaling the graphics in PS is better than the scaling in FCP big time.

You can change frame Rates in Compressor.. Nattress’ plugin for this is better and faster than Compressor.. if it’s really mission critical, look for a place near you that has a Terranex Box. These do the best of the best with frame rate changes. Just edit as you have been in a 23.98 sequence, then in the end transfer only the footage you need if you go out to do the conforming.

In the log and capture prefs, you can capture HDV as ProRes files… they would be larger and not look any better than the native HDV. However all other files (like those from PS) would be 10 bit files, not 8. And the renders and compressions done in the end will be much faster in ProRes than from HDV.
You’ll need more space, but you save time, and improve all the graphics and stills… Look in the Audio/Video settings and select HDV to ProRes as the Capture preset.

If you capture the HDV as ProRes instead of HDV, then you’ll not see the problem. Or in Photoshop, you need to set the pixel aspect ratio from Square. When you create a new file in PS, open it’s properties to include the HDV shaped pixels. In CS 3 it’s in the advanced button when you create a new file and choose the video size.

I could be wrong about this, but I’m pretty sure you need to update your version of FCP 6 to the last version of it to get AVCHD files to work right in Log and Transfer.

.mov’s can be of any number of codecs…
If you shoot with that Canon, you have to transfer the footage before you edit to ProRes. MPEG Streamclip or Compressor will do it. H.264 file editing isn’t supported directly in FCP 7… Keep the same frame rate and size, choose ProRes 4:22 for most things or ProRes LT for things that aren’t going to be used in a bunch of composites, and ProRes HQ for material that has a lot of movement in it. Most editors are using ProRes 4:2:2.

Are you using an external drive to store the media on? If not start with that. Render times won’t speed up much, but you’ll not drop frames as much.

I guess I’m lucky or something, bur rarely need to open autosaves… that said, they always remained connected to the media unless I’ve moved it of course. If you didn’t do that, then it should reconnect automatically or with a simple reconnect media command. Does it reconnect OK?
