You can’t just choose file/import/files, and select those files you’ve moved? If not, they might be corrupt and you need to recapture from your tapes.

Good is in the eye of the beholder. If LT is OK, it’s OK… it’s broadcast quality video. Much depends on movement in the frame, and whether or not you compositing with it etc. For a wedding, I think LT may well be the way to go. Try a tough shot you want to color correct or something in both formats. If LT is good enough, it’s good enough.
Yes, you can edit in LT, then reconnect to HQ transfers. Don’t change the clips names between the two formats. You can use Media Manager to export an HQ sequence “offline”… then reimport and connect to only what was used in the edit too. All filters, titles etc, will just follow along in this workflow. But I bet LT is good enough maybe… or just 422. HQ creates large files… usually don’t look better than LT unless there’s a lot of movement in the frame. LIke faster pans, car races… sports maybe.
Encoding time from h.264 to HQ will likely not be much longer or shorter than LT… it’s that h.264 codec. FCP X might be a wonderful editor for you to try out. You can start editing from the h.264 files AS you ingest them, and can deliver what you need from X, Motion and Compressor. However there’s no real external monitoring yet, and no way to open FCP 7 project files with it, Without 3rd party software, there’s no XML out either.

You could try just editing the DVCPROHD footage into a ProRes sequence. The render then is the transcode… or if that isn’t acceptable, do a transcode in Compressor or other compression software that supports ProRes HQ. If you don’t have to render just to edit it in… it might be just as fast or faster to have done things that way. I’ll bet a faster machine matters for sure here.

Oh, there’s probably any number of reasons. Some apps don’t run in Lion possibly and your best fix is to rebuild your startup disk. If you install Lion, you can do so cleanly, and upgrade/date your software so it runs right, etc.
But I’d perform a clean install of Snow Leopard and go back if you don’t want to upgrade/update or whatever. Next time you want to upgrade anything, I’d post a question about it here first. You’ll have to reinstall your software from the install disks, and you’ll have to back up your documents and all you want to save in order to restore your data. Or buy another disk to use instead.
I’ve not run FCP 7 in Lion much. But haven’t heard it’s not running OK either. Most third party stuff is updating right along if you have that sort of gear. (like AJA, Matrox, CalDigit etc. I’m running it in Snow Leopard for the moment, with a dual boot system which can boot into Lion. I’m running FCP X there.

The HD sounds like it’s HDV material.
You’re editing in an SD sequence however so there’s a lot of rendering ahead, and if most all of it is HD, I think I’d use the same preset for my sequence that the source material is. It might be the cause of your crashes, not clear on that though.
Create a new sequence, and place any of the HD clips in it, and when FCP asks to conform the sequence to the clip’s properties, say yes. I think it’s HDV.
Also post the specs of your computer. When was the last time you rebuilt your start up disk? If you continue to just upgrade current software, over time I believe this causes instability. A wipe of your startup disk, and a clean install of the OS, then FCS results in stability for sure.

If you’re computer is fast enough, you might just edit it all in a DV sequence. The HD material may well play OK without rendering it until the end… so the “transfer” happens when you render the HD in the SD sequence.
If you find that doesn’t work, send the HD clips to Compressor, and transfer them to DV there.
