Not from within that tool.
Only way to do it using Boris’ software is to add it to the track above, and fly it with the motion tab at the pace you need to match with the credit roll.
Motion can do this however. (credit roll with logos).

How much room is on your startup disk? If it’s near full FCP can’t cache to it.
You might find that rendering just the last bit in it’s own sequence (you could nest it) and then close the master sequence. Render just the nested sequence… might fix you right up.
What takes up memory is complex sequences. Once FCP 7 uses up 2.7 gigs of RAM it has to disk cache to move on. If you open only what’s needed to be rendered yet, you’ll open RAM up. Restart FCP after you’ve setup this smaller sequence, and it will clear out the RAM, Render and then open the master sequence for an export. If you’ve nested that last bit, it should be rendered in it’s nest.

FCP 7 and earlier isn’t capable of using all the CPU power you have. It’s ancient code written for OS 8. Just one of the reasons Apple started over with FCP X.
So I’d say what you’re seeing is normal. Complex sequences do take longer for sure, and certain filters take a very long time to render in FCP 7.

Is the sequence all rendered? If not try that on a few clips at a time. The one with the problem will cause the crash… rebuild that edit and give it another go.
Once it’s all rendered, I think I’d export a self contained movie of the sequence, and use Compressor for your transcode.

Just pan both tracks to the center. FCP may be saying it’s a stereo pair, but if music is only on one track, and voice on the other, it’s really 2 track mono.

You can’t change the TC of the timeline in X. You cannot lay back to tape with it either, so there’s little point in having the feature. You can export a QT though to open in FCP 7 or any other NLE for layback. You can capture from tape using any number of NLE’s or software supplied free by AJA, Matrox and BM, and just import the files into X. Then use that same software to make a tape to spec, starting programs at 1hour TC, etc. AJA’s software is called VTR Exchange.
I don’t know about ESPN, but I think the smart thing to do is wait. THe cost of upgrading/cross grading is insignificant compared to the cost of the learning curve that will be involved, and the lost productivity due to that learning curve. FCP X presents a learning curve, but it’s nothing compared to learning a track based editor like Avid, FCP 7 or Premiere.
After all FCP 7 will run on the next gen machines fine (it does on all of the i5 and i7’s right now), and it will run in Lion.. it’s not as if it gets turned off by X or anything of the sort.
FCP 7 is no longer going to be developed, so Apple quit selling it. Probably not the best idea. But most of the possible pro user base already owns the software. There is no dongle… There are copies of FCS 3 all over the place for sale too… Amazon has it, as do many VAR’s I hear. A shipment was sent to them not long ago. Any major installation like ESPN can still buy more stations if need be directly from Apple. Little guys like me can find it on Amazon or ebay, and at local VAR’s. Just not from Apple directly.
You’re right about one thing, it has extremely cool features and it’s just getting started IMHO.

FCP 7 is a paid for upgrade. You can still find copies of it around. Amazon has some here in the US I know.

In order to give sage advice, I think we all need some more info.
What format do you shoot and edit? Do you have a capture card like a Kona card or Matrox box, etc.? Which version of FCP are you running?
The latest computers would ALL be faster than any G5…
I’ve a new MacBook Pro 17″ 2.2 machine which is 30% FASTER than my 8 core intel 3 gig machine. Let alone a G5… a mac mini would process faster than any G5.
