H.264 files aren’t supported in FCP 7. So you need to transcode them to ProRes before you edit.

  • The sequence settings should match the clip’s properties exactly. I’ll bet you need to change the pixel aspect ratio. The correct one will be displayed in the column labled “Aspect ratio” in the browser. All clips will likely be the same… Set the sequence’s aspect ratio to the same setting…

Issue 1: Copy the entire contents of the cards to a hard drive then import from there.
Issue 2: Not clear what’s going on there, but bet it’s related to Issue 3…
Issue 3: I’ll wager that the media drive isn’t fast enough. Is this a small 5400 RPM portable? or a 3.5 inch 7200 rpm drive or?
Issue 4: The MP4 files aren’t supported in FCP. They “Act” like they do, but they don’t. They too have to be transcoded to ProRes before editing with them.

Don’t think upgrading is going to fix you up here..

Post more about the workflow involved. Are you transcoding the footage to prores first? How fast are the media drives?

November 11, 2011 at 2:38 pm in reply to: alternative to h.264?

I think the gamma issues are a QuickTime problem, and not an H.264 problem per se.

So could you add a gamma adjustment filter in compressor or other compression software to fix your gamma shift, and stay with h.264?

Did you transcode the 5D footage to ProRes first? That’s a must.

Also might consider transcoding the audio to be 23.98 to avoid the syncing issue in the first place.

My guess is that your graphics card’s HDMI out isn’t supported in FCP… You really need a proper video I/O to do this correctly. Something from AJA, BlackMagic or Matrox would do the trick.

I personally don’t like editing GOP structured media, because it’s inefficient…

As a test, try transcoding a few clips to ProRes (422 should be just fine unless you have a lot of fast movement in the frame. Then choose 422HQ. Open a new project to import these files into. See if that clears it up.

Crashes like this are either related to software installs that need to be redone, or a hardware problem. (usually not a cheap fix, so let’s hope a clean install would fix you up.)

Start by trashing preferences, if it remains unstable, then try a new user account. If that fails, you likely need to perform a clean install of all of the software including the OS. If that fails, you have a hardware problem. Could be RAM gone bad, but it’s more likely an installation that needs re doing.

When is the last time you performed a clean install? Should be done any time you upgrade the OS or FCS.

Of course they will be affected by the resizing. You should avoid it.

The friend needs to recapture it all properly.
