I think you need more RAM and a faster cpu to work natively in HDV, however you might try using the intermediate codec instead of the native codec to reduce the overhead on the CPU caused by working natively in HDV.

If we are talking DV, look in the capture presets you are using… in the preset editor window you open by clicking on this preset in the A/V settings, you can select which and how many tracks are being captured.

It shouldn’t change the look of the images… however why are you doing this at all? do you need the portability or?

Best is a relative word… if 24fps, choose advanced mode so you can remove the pulldown pattern on the fly as you capture. However, I personally think that more fps is better looking depending on the “look” you want. 24 fps looks a bit more like film, but not enough in my opinion to warrant using it on it’s own. However 24fps material will allow for a higher quality MPEG-2 file for the DVD in the end, so there’s a judgement call there on which format to use, but remember that more fps equals smoother camera moves and motion on screen…

Shouldn’t need to do anything special with Photoshop files, however the AE files may present some challenges. You’ll need to export self contained QuickTime movies from AE so they will work with FCP on the laptop. An anamation codec and uncompressed QuickTime should do the job I’d think, but you’ll have to render them in FCP probably.

In this arena, you get what you pay for I think, and there aren’t any “free lunches”. Both companies make viable products, however, I think the Kona 2 card is the top of the heap today…

I’d pick the format you want to edit in, and use your Kona 2 card? with an analog adapter and up/down convert it all to the same media file format… that way they all sing together in FCP as it were…

I agree Vegas would be my choice on a PC too.
That said, I’d be very hard pressed to change from Mac’s and FCP…
