You’re going down from HD to SD… so there’s going to be loss involved.
Can you make a Blu-Ray disc? That would preserve the HD and nearly quadruple the resolution.

I don’t understand the situation there. You have an unlicensed copy on a computer? or did you buy this license and can’t find the registration papers or? If you buy a retail license from say e-bay and it’s not FCP 7, it is upgradeable to FCP 7 by calling Apple at the number above.

Well, it’s always either software or hardware causing problems, so when was the last time you did a clean install on that machine? i.e., erased the startup disk and reinstalled it all from the OS up?
Next question would be surrounding your project’s length and timeline’s complexity. how many clips in the sequence? how many sequences open? It’s sequences open that use up all the RAM… if it’s all used up (and we’re only talking about 2.7 gigs before disc caching begins) It sounds like you’re running into a RAM clog… when the wheel appears, the computer is disc caching something possibly.

Have you tried collapsing the multiclips before the render? Might work to fix you up…

Most always, the problem with dropping frames stems from drives not being able to keep up. Have you tested the speed of that drive? Needs to be pretty fast. Over 60mb/s read for sure.

Have you used AJA’s speed testing software or other to test it’s speed? Might do that just to be sure it’s operating at full speed.

In real time? That I’m not sure of, but there’s several ways you could capture it as HD, then edit it… iShowU or Comtasia are a couple of capture utilities.
