The Hollywood studios are using companies in LA, seems to me you too could use them. Got LA 411 or other listing guide for LA? The DVD/blu ray pros would be listed there.

That said, if the noise is in the shot, it’s going to be in the compression too. But the higher bit rate you do might fix you up.

8-Core 3.0 Intel Mac Pro, Dual 2 gig G5, AJA Kona SD, AJA Kona 2, Huge Systems Array UL3D, AJA Io HD, 17″ MBP, Matrox MXO2 with MAX – Cinema Displays I have a 22″ that I paid 4k for still working. G4 with Kona SD card, and SCSI card.

  • If you merge the clips, then export the clips (instead of a sequence) it would maintain the name of the video file. Would that help the workflow?

Maybe not though… more steps possibly, but no way I know of to make a sequence automatically name itself the same name as a first clip added to it.

Well, the movies probably started with better than what you shot (35 or 4k for example so since they start higher quality then end up higher quality) and they’re using expensive compression boards to make the DVD’s (not cheap and some are proprietary) and they use dual layer DVD’s and a higher bit rate than you might have…

A CBR will help with the compression in Compressor if you use a dual layer and then set it the bit rate to 8 Mbps. a CBR makes larger files, and 100 minutes will just fit on a dual layer DVD probably. If not use the CBR a bit lower, you can see the duration that will fit the DVD in Compressor as you change the bit rate. I work short form, but a CBR makes a HUGE difference in the quality of the picture. You change all of this in the Inspector after you add a preset.

How does the footage look when you view it externally? Is the noise there?

RAM chips could be tested. Would be where to look first for a hardware problem. Just take out a pair or one at a time etc… see if it clears up when a chip is out.

Also, you do need to rebuild a startup disk.. Bet that’s likely part of this problem, unless unsupported media is in use maybe, but doesn’t sound like that. It’s DV right?

My guts say a new startup disk is in your future… try a fw drive and startup from that even… Build it while FCP is in work on the other station? Takes about 1/2 day.

It will import any media from DV to HD to PSD to whatever save RED files which is coming soon according to Apple. It will capture DV or HDV via firewire connections.

FCP 7 will run on Lion.

There are a couple of apps that will translate much of a sequence between FCP 7 and FCP X. They are Xto7 and 7toX. Both available in the apps store. (not expensive either).

    Learn FCP X?

It’s gonna run just peachy on that new machine, and at 399 including Motion 5 and Compressor, seems to me to be a no brainer if you can get away from FCP 7…

ProRes. AIC is very lossy. Even ProRes LT would be a ton better.
