The plus in working in ProREs instead of XDCAM is speed, and quality of any elements not shot XDCAM such as graphics and stills possibly. It will render a lot faster throughout the post process if you transcode the XDCAM up front. (at the cost of drive space of course)
You can export any sequence to the two codecs you list there, but preserving the 10 bit color in all other clips you add (except the XDCAM material which was recorded 8 bit) You need to edit in a ProRes sequence. If you don’t transcode, you’ll eventually have to render all of the XDCAM if you simply render it to ProRes. So… up to you.

You do have to set it up to cut video only… have you done that?

Click open the FCP manual found in the FCP Help menu. Search it on “Variable Speed” and you’ll see how to do this in FCP… Not too easy to explain here, but easy enough to do with those instructions.

EQing it isn’t the best… send the audio to SoundTrack Pro, and reduce the noise there with it’s noise reduction features. Works great. If you just search STP’s Help on “Reduce Noise” you’ll find the instructions. Easy too.

True, you can do this… I’ve been running it all either X only under Lion, or both under Lion, or X running on one startup disk, and 7 running on another. All seem to work OK. When you install X, it will put the older Studio apps in another folder inside the apps folder. This may cause a bit of havoc if you have a capture card installed and it presumes that FCP 7 is just inside the apps folder… so you can drag it out if need be.
We’ve been running FCP X and 7 on the same startup disk for an entire semester at the CFS on 25 stations in my classroom for an entire semester no problems I can see.

Both the Beta and the D2 have 8 bit color depths. However if you worked in ProRes, you’d not lose anything (nor improve it per se) however anything added to a sequence such as graphics, stills could retain all 10 bits and those elements might exhibit less banding issues. Any ProRes compression is 10 bit.
That said, uprezzing won’t improve anything likely will hurt the picture quality unless you use hardware for the upres that’s high quality (Kona 3 or better but even then, it’s not quite as sharp as looking at it in SD on an SD set. After all you’re expanding the picture a lot.

Best quality codec is likely ProRes… if the stills have a lot of detail in them (like grass, trees, etc. then choose ProRes HQ – if not, ProRes 422 will look the same as HQ. Probably should choose a 1080 30p size and frame rate. 24 will not look as good on moves IMHO.

True, 10 bit video is going to exhibit less banding. But I doubt that any 8 bit recording will improve because you have captured it at 10 bits (had to have SHOT it at 10 bits)… so don’t think it will do anything but make bigger files of the captures.

If you’re going to make files, why not just burn in a TC window burn in the process? I’ve been doing this for client approvals for a long time, and it sure seems to fit the bill.
