Creeker- Do you have an external NTSC broadcast monitor? Standard definition NTSC (especially graphics) look bad on an LCD screen. Don’t judge the graphics until you’ve seen them on an external NTSC monitor.

Mike- I would first check the camera menu and see if the analog out (S-video) is set to 0 or 7.5 IRE. Remember that set-up is an analog only issue (and only in the United States). Digital black is 0. FCP is 0 black. 1080i HD is 0 black. Go to places where you have analog out and you will find the culprit. Using color bars with pluge is the best way to check your system starting by digitizing color bars from the camera and checking the black level each step of the way.
Hope this helps.

Big Dan- Remember in FCP you can have multiple projects open at the same time (they’re tabs in the browser). You can sort in the browser by clicking on the top of a browser column. Copy the clip you want and paste it into the project you want it in.
Another way, if you know the name of the clip, you can go to the XSAN disk FCP scratch folder (FCP makes folders for each project) and drag your clip into the project you want it in.
Hope this helps.

Zzinim- Experiment! Make a 10 sec. sequence and export it via compressor per instructions above. We always test, test, test using short sequences. When we find one that does exactly what we want we make our own step by step procedure (in text edit) for our system. Hope this helps.

Nico- Close out of final FCP>Trash FCP Preferences>Turn on Z-1>plug in firewire>go to Apple menu ‘About this Mac’>more info>select firewire devices. Is the Z-1 there standing tall? If not you have a camera/firewire/computer issue. If it is there you have a camera/firewire settings issue that may have been fixed by dumping preferences. Hope this helps.

February 28, 2006 at 4:48 pm in reply to: moving SATA 4-bay raids from one computer to anotherDavid- Thanks for the response on that. Yea, I guess we’re timid in that regard. We were burned early on during a hot swap (which was probably pilot error) so we’ve been goosey ever since. I see SeriTek has step by step instructions and they are simple. Its time to start going that route.

February 28, 2006 at 7:40 am in reply to: moving SATA 4-bay raids from one computer to anothersacci- We’ve done this many times. We have SeriTek cards and enclosures. We use Raid 0 and stripe them in pairs (using Apple’s disk utility-non-journaled). To play it safe we try and boot down before we start unplugging things. Then the drives show up on the desktop of the other system when we boot it up. We have hot swapped when we’re in a hurry (and click our way through the dialog box warnings) but it really doesn’t take that long to shut down and unplug. If the enclosures have the removable trays it makes it even simpler. SATA is awesome!

Ajith- When our timeline gets out there (over 15 minutes) we go to sequence settings and shut-off waveform ’til we need it.

jwedit- I also think its best to let FCP make the folders for you. As mentioned earlier just go to system settings and select your scratch drive and FCP will make a folder inside the scratch folder with your project name on the folder. If it works best for you to have everything in one place then copy outside stuff into that folder then drag and drop them into a bin in FCP.
Hope this helps.
