Apple Annie- Your post is somewhat confusing.

“I was just given some footage that was shot HD 16:9. I have a HDV camera that I can use to capture the footage..”

I will make the presumption that you were given an HDV tape and you want to plug the tape into your HDV camera and down convert it to SD 4×3. If the tape was shot with the same HDV format as your camera and your camera is Sony you are probably in luck. Plug in the tape and go to your menu and set the ilink convert to the desired downconverted format and then set the downconvert menu item to Squeeze or Edgecrop (which ever works).

    Hope this helps.

Nick- Check the drop down in your batch capture window- somthing like ‘digitize selected clips’. It gives you choices of what to batch capture.

Dan- You are right. You’ll notice there’s even an interface for proc amp settings in FCP’s log and capture settings tab… but they are grayed out. Maybe a little prodding will help activate those controls RIGHT IN FCP.

Oh, and machine control in the control panel! Now we’re making progress. Aja promotes it as it making your G-5 a virtual VTR….. but without play, rewind and fast forward what kind of VTR is it? Geeze Dan now that you have me thinking about it why not a RECORD button too!

Let’s see….. how about going straight to mpeg2 directly from tape IN REAL TIME!

Dan- I should have also explained that FCP takes control of the Kona card when once its launched and you can’t make any adjustments in the Kona Control Panel. Once you make the adjustments THEN launch FCP the adjustments remain in effect. Not real intuitive but it works.

Dan- Have you loaded your Kona LH control panel? Here is the AJA kona support page: https://www.aja.com/support_kona.html. It has a proc amp where you can adjust brightness (gamma). Apply your setting THEN launch FCP.
    Hope this helps.

Chemix- Record color bars from the Z1. Look at the bars on the waveform monitor in FCP log and capture. How does the luma look there? Compare the bars with the FCP 1080i color bars from the viewer (drop down). Are they a match? Try and trace it down using color bars.

  • Otis- Good, you found the solution for audio dropout on going to digibeta. This is Jerry from the FCP forum. I thought that the issue was in that area somewhere. As I have the LH I’ll make a note of the solution.

March 28, 2006 at 8:40 am in reply to: Perform a split end edit also known as an L edit

Jay- I split the edit by
    1. setting my audio in mark for the incoming clip in the viewer (knowing that the video is coming in there also).
    2. I place the CTI in the timeline where I want the audio for the new clip to come in
    3. click the insert button on the canvas window (F9)
    4. Option click the cursor over the video cut in the timeline (getting arrows that point both directions) and slide the video cut to the right where I want it.

    Delayed video edit complete

Maybe someone has a quicker/better way, but this works for me. Hope this helps.

  • Otis- Had a somewhat similar problem going to digitbeta. It ended up being a synch issue. In our case I believe we had to disconnect the video out from the digibeta going to the Kona (it was looping through and messing with the timing).

March 27, 2006 at 7:22 am in reply to: HDV & Text

Creeker- HDV is a different animal. As you know, HDV is mpeg2 and if you are editing HDV native in FCP5 then FCP goes through a conforming process for the timeline before it goes out to tape. The true test is to be viewing on an external high def monitor via a video card like Kona or Black Magic (as Steve suggests) in 1080i high defintition. And even better yet output a portion of your show (with lots of graphics) back to HDV tape. Then use the HDV camera or deck’s component outputs plugged into your 1080i compatible high def projector and see how it looks on screen. My guess is you will be impressed with the results. HDV has major limitations but how much can we expect from a $5,000 camera? Once you get more comfortable with its unusual workflow you’ll find your own way to get the most out of the format. I hope this helps.
