  • Perform a split end edit also known as an L edit

I have FCP HD. Have dual 1.8 g5.
I have searched the Apple manual to do a split end edit- meanoing that you want the audio of the upcoming clip to start before the cut, under the preceeding video..it softens the transition.
And, audio needs to stay in sync.
OK, so I have tried holding down the Option key while grabbing the end of the audio clip ( and the timeline is in Linked)to move it fwd- nope, just reads out how many seconds or frames the picture and sound are out of sync
I have tried different versions of the above without luck.
I know Apple has made this fucntion easy without a lot of key strokes.
Now I have had some say..” hmm… use the slide tool or the slip tool or roll-” but without exact keystrokes, I am lost. The L.A. FCP users group gave me some suggestions but too complicated or too confusing. Also do tracks have to “set” in some manner for this to happen other than locking? Tx for the “easy” explanation in advance. Jay

Click the cursor on the audio edit so that it is highlighted.

Type in the number of frames you want the edit to move (like -4) and hit RETURN or ENTER.

If this doesn’t work, you might need to UNLINK the Audio from the Video clips.

Generally you’d use the roll tool. Press R. Then option click the audio edit point. Then option click and hold and move it forward or backward depending on where you want the edit to go.

You could also option click to highlight the edit, move the playhead to where you want it, then press E for extend and it will roll it for you.

Pretty 101 stuff that should be basic tutorial reading. Although I haven’t touched the tutorials since 1.2.

Remember, option clicking actually does the reverse of a regular click. If you have linked selection turned ON, then option click will act normally, and ignore the linked selection. But if you have linked selection turned off, option clicking will select as if it’s ON, selecting both audio and video.

to mark the in-point for video press Control-I, to mark the out-point for video press Control-O
to mark the in-point for audio press Command-Option-I, to mark the out-point for audio press Command-Option-O

you can do this in timeline or viewer and edit using the canvas overlays, or keyboard shortcuts, F9 and F10 etc, for Insert, Overwrite

you can see these split edit shortcuts under the Mark > Mark Split submenu

alternatively drag and drop or otherwise edit your clips to the timeline, then if not turned off you should turn off linking (Shift-L)
now you can use the roll tool (r) to pull your edit to the desired shape; or select your edit point first, then move your playhead to the desired new postion and press the extend key (e) to snap the edit to the new position

… so many ways to skin a cat

Jay- I split the edit by
    1. setting my audio in mark for the incoming clip in the viewer (knowing that the video is coming in there also).
    2. I place the CTI in the timeline where I want the audio for the new clip to come in
    3. click the insert button on the canvas window (F9)
    4. Option click the cursor over the video cut in the timeline (getting arrows that point both directions) and slide the video cut to the right where I want it.

    Delayed video edit complete

Maybe someone has a quicker/better way, but this works for me. Hope this helps.
