Julie- This problem has been addressed many times in the forum. The best guess is that it is a firewire issue. The problem being that you are operating two pieces of hardware on the firewire bus at the same time. A quick and inexpensive solution may be to buy and install a PCI firewire card (less than $25) to give your system a 2nd firewire bus. Hope this helps.

June 30, 2006 at 12:52 am in reply to: Yay! Another HD Format! Just what we need!

Classic shooting themselves in the foot. The HD-DVD Blue-Ray fiasco hasn’t just slowed high-def on DVD… it has put the brakes on HD.

How many consumers out there have HD ‘compatible’ TVs but don’t have the tuners or HD signal connnected to it? If its confusing for us whats it like for the consumer?!

The sad thing is DVD had really set out blueprint on how to do it right; a worldwide format that provides a quality component signal, interactivity, user friendly interface and offers copyright protection.

HD looked like it was finally going to make the big push into the home. IMHO I think the HD format war will slow the process and push HD in the home out another year or two. MTC.

June 21, 2006 at 4:10 pm in reply to: One last quick HDV question

Muresan12- An alternative workflow that has been productive for us is to digitize and edit in native HDV (if you have the mac to handle it). The size of the media files are not much bigger than DV. I would cut the show together with minimal transitions and simple graphics (stay away from filters and layered graphics). Leave slop where you want to add transitions. If you don’t have a video card you can monitor your work with FCP ‘digital cinema desktop’ (view menu). Once you have your base show edited and approved lay back to HDV native. No converter box is needed unless you want an external monitor.

Now digitize using the HD Codec of choice for final delivery (8-bit uncompressed HD, DVCPro HD, etc.) for your final edit/graphics/color correction, etc. Now you will need the converter box and a system that will handle that codecs bandwidth.

Wayne is right on with his specs on HDV. Just wanted you to know there are alternative ways to work with HDV. The key is to learn its limitations and exploit its benefits.

    Hope this helps.

May 25, 2006 at 4:10 pm in reply to: sata expansion for G5?

Gary- I second David on the external SATAs. We have one Firmtek two bay and two four bay enclosures on our G-5 PCI-X systems and couldn’t be happier. You plug them in and they work. Great for expansion also…. buy extra trays and drives in pairs for less than 50 cents a gig. Hot swappable and they’re quiet and don’t heat up the interior of the G-5.

May 22, 2006 at 11:04 pm in reply to: How to deliver spots to stations digitally

Joseph- I am going to make the assumption that you digitized the footage as DVCPro50 and edited in FCP in DVCPro50 native timeline. The first step is to find out from the station if they have FCP/Quicktime with the DVCPro50 codec. The most direct question would be to ask, ‘can I deliver the spot as a DVCPro50 quicktime movie on a firewire drive or DVDRom?’ If they say yes then export (File menu>export>quicktime movie. We edit and export our 1/2 hour TV show as 8-bit uncompressed quicktime movies (about 34 gigs) and deliver on firewire drives to our dub house for layoff to tape.

    Hope this helps.

Dave- You are still able to do a hard record to the deck..right? You’d just have to build your slate, bars etc. in the timeline and loose the ability
    to set the timecode.

Jimmy- Check out this AJA HDV whitepaper- https://www.aja.com/pdf/support/AJA_whitepaper_HDV.pdf

It gives some workflow suggestions that might help on your project. If you have the Kona and FCP 5 you could
work in HDV native cuts only (I wouldn’t do any color correction or graphics compositing in HDV).

A real advantage would be the ability to edit with HD external monitoring and small file sizes. You’ll then have the option of going back out SDI to HD Cam, DVCPro HD or even HDV native then on to your final online finishing.
