Brian- Make a freeze frame (modify menu) and export a frame from that. Remember it will be 1440 pixels wide so take it into photoshop and resize to 1920 and if you have interlacing artifacts use the video filter ‘deinterlace’.

    Hope this helps.

Martin- You may be hearing both your production speakers AND your computer speakers. Check your speaker settings in your system preferences and production preferences.

Scott- Just a little advice from a person with experience; don’t try and force FCP to work like an Avid…. it will only cause lots of frustration. Let go of all the Avid ways of doing things but use all of your editing experience and you will be flying with FCP in a couple of weeks. Some of the workflow will seem very strange at first but will make sense as you become more fimiliar with it. I came from m100 and it was real tough at first ’til I let go of the m100 workflow and accepted that I was in a whole new world. Good luck.

Cadobee- To connect you’ll need component cables (one comes with the Z-1) and connectors to match up with Kona LH inputs. On the audio we use a mackie mixer to get the proper levels.

Cadobee- Chris is right on with the Kona LH suggestion.

We use it two different ways depending on the job. If the delivery is SD only then we us our M10U’s component output to digitize using the FCP 8-bit uncompressed codec. We edit in 8-bit and ouput to Betacam SP for broadcast or to mpeg2 via compressor for a very clean SD DVD.

If we want an HDV master we stay HDV native and back out to HDV. We then use our M10U’s component outputs with the decks hardware downconvert feature to re-digitze an 8-bit uncompressed SD master and follow the workflow above for a very clean SD conversion for DVD.

The second method is slower because you a dealing with HDV’s limitations (ie.conforming, mpeg2 editing, etc.) but you have an HD(V) master.

The Kona LH allows you to monitor the SD as you work in FCP.

    Hope this helps.

October 25, 2006 at 5:23 pm in reply to: V1U looks like a step forward…

Chris- I’m an old video dog from Betacam SP days (300a purchased in 1991). The camera was blowing capacitors (if you’ve ever blown capacitors you’ll know by the smell…they STINK) so I had to move on. I went Z-1 two years ago and have been very happy with the results. I have the Kona LH and have been using the component inputs to edit in SD 8 bit uncompressed from the component outputs from the Z-1. Its better than Betacam.

I’ve also done a couple of HDV projects and have used the LH for monitoring in HD. The limitations of editing HDV (mpeg 2) were baffling at first but once you have the settings down it is actually pretty simple. The key for me once the decision was made to go HDV in FCP was to stay HDV native all the way through then use the LH to real time convert to the format of choice.

My input on HDV…. don’t know if the V1-U is even being delivered yet.

September 8, 2006 at 5:00 pm in reply to: HDV editing….

TioChan- What works for me: Quit out of FCP. Set deck I/O settings to: VCR: HDV, Component: 1080i, iLink Conv.: Off, AV/DV out: Off.
Plug firewire into camera then computer. Check computer System Profiler (apple icon>more info) and see if deck is listed under firewire devices.
If there launch FCP use HDV easy setup. Make sure capture preset is HDV and device control is Sony HDV Firewire. I hope this helps.

TG- Go out HDV to your Z-1 then i-link downconvert to DV back into FCP for your DV copy. Unless you have an Aja or BM card you are not going to be able to downcovert from FCP.

Julie- Don’t be intimidated by installing a firewire 400 PCI card. If you havn’t pulled the side off a G-5 this is a good time to learn (if you are inclined to do so). We bought ours at the local Mac dealer for $19. The G-5 manual gives a step by step (with photos I believe) on how its done.
