…in the world of HDV. Anyone out there tested this and it’s diminutive hard disc? I’m dying to know how it will work with Apple and FCP studio, also interested in what acquisition via HDMI may or may not mean or if it’s even possible. Pros and cons from you real-world folks would be much appreciated.

I’m one of those cautious folks who wait on new stuff, but perhaps this is a reason to go for HDV? My system details, I currently run a Kona LH in a G5 dual 2 gig. I have a 2 TB SATA raid, an 800 gig Huge SCSI and several Big Disk Extremes for storage.

Chris- I’m an old video dog from Betacam SP days (300a purchased in 1991). The camera was blowing capacitors (if you’ve ever blown capacitors you’ll know by the smell…they STINK) so I had to move on. I went Z-1 two years ago and have been very happy with the results. I have the Kona LH and have been using the component inputs to edit in SD 8 bit uncompressed from the component outputs from the Z-1. Its better than Betacam.

I’ve also done a couple of HDV projects and have used the LH for monitoring in HD. The limitations of editing HDV (mpeg 2) were baffling at first but once you have the settings down it is actually pretty simple. The key for me once the decision was made to go HDV in FCP was to stay HDV native all the way through then use the LH to real time convert to the format of choice.

My input on HDV…. don’t know if the V1-U is even being delivered yet.
