eph- All the settings have to be right on. Sometimes I’ve had to start at ground zero. Quit out of FCP. Turn off the deck. Turn on the deck. Make sure the menu settings are correct in the deck; all in/out settings are set to HDV. Turn on deck. Disconnect all other firewire devices. Connect deck firewire. Go to apple menu>about this mac>more info>firewire. Is the deck listed? If it is launch your HDV firewire project and go to audio/video settings.

Bogiesan- I’ve seen that Boise loc on the signature and wondered if you fished. Being a hard core fishing type I couldn’t help but notice the mention of caddis flys on the north fork.

Know anything about the green drake hatch on Silver Creek?

    I’ve heard rumors.

I know, I know….. how does this relate to FCP? Hey, a guy needs an outdoor passion to get him away from staring at these glowing screens!

February 12, 2006 at 5:15 am in reply to: 9 hrs of bad TC from DSR300. Any ideas?

P2- This issue harkens back to my betacam days when the camera was not set to record TC in auto (both VITC AND LTC). Kind of a long shot but it might have been the problem. If the code was jam synched I would think that one of the codes is correct and there may be a switch on the playback deck to set to the code that is correct. Betacam had a switch that could can be positioned in VITC, LTC or Auto. Or you may have to insert edit the correct code if its worth the time and effort.

February 7, 2006 at 4:55 pm in reply to: monitoring HDV realtime in FCP

Bomb- Looks like the Y output is composite. Composite does not carry a high def signal. You’ll need a card that delivers component HD or SDI HD. If you go the SDI route the monitors are spendy.

Thanks Walter- Yea, coming in component via the Kona LH and still no clip setting adjustment. Any ideas? I tried tech support but I think they were buried. Will try again today.

January 26, 2006 at 5:06 pm in reply to: Opinions on HDV workflow

    Eric- An option we used was;

Shot HDV>edit HDV native in FCP5> output HDV (now have HDV Master)> Component out of camera (need component analog video card) > FCP 8 bit uncompressed>FCP 8-bit uncompressed export to Compressor for mpeg2/DVD.

A bit convoluted but we had excellent results and everything was real time (except for some minimal rendering/conforming in HDV timeline).

    Hope this helps.

January 17, 2006 at 6:42 am in reply to: Quicktime and black level

Jack- I see where no one has responded yet so I’ll pass on some black level information that I have learned.

7.5 Black level (setup) is a U.S. analog issue. FCP operates in the digital domain and works at 0 black level. Most U.S. consumer analog equipment (VHS, DVD, etc.) delivers video with a 7.5 black level. Quicktime is digital so it is a native
0 black level. Now having said that there are issues playing Quicktime on a Mac and exporting them and playing them on a windows machine. Windows and Mac have different native Gamma levels and the what looks great on a Mac looks dark on a PC.

But for more info on black levels check the following website:

January 13, 2006 at 5:31 pm in reply to: RAID 5? Any takers. Advice appreciated!

Tim- We understand that backup is super important but we feel backing up on our media drives is NOT the way to go. In our case we save all the graphics and project files on an external firewire drive that is not part of the everyday system. We also output an 8-bit uncompressed quicktime movie of our 30 min. show (about 32 gigs). If there is a simple fix later on we transfer the file to the media drives, drop the file into FCP and make the fix and we’re on our way.

We have even taken it a step further. Our dub house has FCP5 and we deliver him the quicktime movie and he goes out to vhs for closed captioning then to Digibeta for our dub master.

We feel that you are asking for trouble when you mix backup files with active media files. We also understand that different workflows demand different strategies. Just sharing a workflow that has worked for us.

January 13, 2006 at 2:16 am in reply to: RAID 5? Any takers. Advice appreciated!

Jeff- Why cut your storage in half by using Raid 5? What’s the downside to raid 0? So you have to redig… no big deal. If you’re doing 8-bit uncompressed you need the speed of raid 0.

We’ve done three systems now with external SATA and love it. Seri-tek (Firmtek) cards have worked very well for us. Go with the one with 4 external connectors. SATA II is close (if its not already here) so you may want to see if its available or worth waiting for. FWIW.
