bdstric- HDV timecode has a history of being unstable. Here is what works best for us.

1. Each clip must have at least 5 seconds of pre-roll/post-roll. If not capture it as you go.

2. disconnect all other firewire devices. If you are digitizing to an external firewire drive install a seperate firewire bus (inexpensive PCI card).

3. We use the DVCProHD firewire machine control for our M10U deck. You must select this from the Log and Capture window.

Wrong.

To get true HDV NATIVE you need to use firewire. To get true HD you go in 1080i component uncompressed or as Ray suggested DVCProHD. To do uncompressed you need a super drive setup with lots of space.

Now for machine control use Sony HDV and if that doesn’t work try this; when you are in FCP log and capture window select the machine control tab and select DVCProHD machine control (FCP won’t let you select it in audio/video settings). That is the most stable machine control that we have found but with HDV’s long gop time code is a little dicey and you have to have tons of pre-roll and post-roll. Where we don’t have slop we capture those clips on the fly.

Ming- Use firewire for machine control and you’ll get your timecode. We select our machine control in the log and capture settings tab.

What format are you editing in? DV or HDV?

If it’s DV then you need to convert the HDV footage IN
THE CAMERA so DV is coming out the firewire cable.

Camera Settings
VCR/ HDV/DV: HDV (you said it was shot HDV)
Component Settings: 1080i/480i (use your PAL setting)
iLink Conversion: ON
Down Convert: if 4×3 use edgecrop, if 16×9 use squeeze
AV-DV Out: ON

Then use the same DV easy set-up in FCP you were using
to capture your DV footage.

tommydutchie- If it is a Sony HDV camera check the iLink conversion on the camera menu. Could be in the wrong position.

Todd- Why not deliver the SD in 16×9? Worst case it will be letterboxed on a 4×3 screen. Any TV delivered in the last 5 years will handle it fine and the viewer has lots of options with the remote. DVD is widescreen compliant. 4×3 is right there with VHS…. at the end of its useful life.

Peterd- Sorry nothing works so far. Here is what I would do in sequence to try and resolve the issue;
-Set deck I/O menu to>HDV>iLink OFF>AV/DV Out to OFF
– Plug the HVR-M10U component out directly to an HD TV and verify the deck is putting out true HD>if yes proceed.
– Quit FCP and power down deck and plug in firewire… then power up deck and go to apple icon> about this Mac>more info>click on firewire and see if the computer is seeing the deck>if yes proceed.
-Launch FCP>Easy Setup>HDV>Log and Capture>You should have VTR OK for deck control>roll tape from capture window and you should have picture and audio (delayed) but there.

Peterd- You may have already been here but make sure your iLink convert is turned OFF on your M10U deck (I/O menu).
