  • HDV capture turns out white?

So after capturing all these DV tapes, i tried an HDV tape.. and something keeps going wrong.

Some specs to start… using this big Apple computer, (at home i’m used to pc/windows) and working with the Final Cut Pro 5. The deck is a Sony HDV deck. I’m in the Netherlands so it’s all PAL, and stuff here.

I changed the Easy Set-up to HDV.. also changed the deck from dv to hdv.. (it’s on Auto now). When i play the tape, it shows on the tv-monitor and not on the capture-screen in final cut. Then i capture stuff, and it loads.. duration is good, but it will simply not play in final cut. When i drag it to the timeline it shows it has sound, but no visuals. (and a red line like it’s not rendered)..

The core file.. in the info from the quiktimeplayer says:

    Format: HDV 1080i50, 1440 x 1080 (1999 x 106), Millions
16-bit Integer (Big Endian), 2.0 (Mono Mono), 48,000 kHz
    FPS: 25
    Playing FPS: (Available while playing.)

My boss said that that last one.. ‘available while playing.’ wasn’t correct.. I can make screenshots of certain settings, but someone might already know what’s wrong. I hope 🙂

tommydutchie- If it is a Sony HDV camera check the iLink conversion on the camera menu. Could be in the wrong position.

That’s also possible in the capture deck right?

    i.LINK set options:

    HDV->DV CONV
    -OFF
    -DVCAM
    -DV SP

last one is on.. but i don’t see what else to select

    Down Convert
    -Squeeze
    -Edge Crop

    Squeeze is selected.

The files i capture have sound, the image is white while played in quiktime and none in final cut.. including a red line like it’s not rendered.. 🙁

    tommydutchie-

What format are you editing in? DV or HDV?

If it’s DV then you need to convert the HDV footage IN
THE CAMERA so DV is coming out the firewire cable.

    Camera Settings
VCR/ HDV/DV: HDV (you said it was shot HDV)
Component Settings: 1080i/480i (use your PAL setting)
    iLink Conversion: ON
Down Convert: if 4×3 use edgecrop, if 16×9 use squeeze
    AV-DV Out: ON

Then use the same DV easy set-up in FCP you were using
    to capture your DV footage.

    Hope this helps.
