  • HDV Output to Sony HVR25mu problems…

    Hi…

I’m using FCP 5.1.4 on an older MAC G5, 1,8ghz 1,25 gb ram. I’ve been trying to do an HDV 1080 60i output to a Sony HVR25mu HDV deck and FCP doesn’t see the deck. Here’s where it gets fun… I can actually control and digitize HDV using the usual protocols (Sony HDV firewire device control and HDV capture preset, it all works fine. I can cut the material real time no problem… But in the view menu, once I’ve refreshed the device, the HDV 1080 60i option appears and but is dimmed and unselectable. Same when I go to the A/V device tab in the Audio/Video Settings, the Playback tab offers the same dimmed 1080 60i option but the output to a different output tab allow me to select the 1080 60i although it still doesn’t see the deck or allow either edit to tape or print to tape…

My local FCP reseller has never seen this, same with the Sony guys I talked to… I’ve done many resets, (trashing prefs and the like… tried 4 different firewire cables…)

Has any one seen this or can any one offer helpful thoughts or hints

enzojeanb- Try this. On your FCP audio/video settings go to:
    A/V Devices Tab

    Hi Jerry

Thanks…. I already had tried that since it looked like firewire was only seeing the deck as a destination not as a playback interface… It was also the only menu where the HDV 1080 60i option was not dimmed out…

The rig wouldn’t generate a signal to the deck…

    ah well…

in the mean time I,ve decided to bite the bullet and buy a Kona card and a new G5… expensive solution but when it has to get out… it has to get out….

    cheers
    Jean

Isn’t there an issue with outputting HDV to an external monitor or deck via firewire, in that you have to render the entire project down in oder to do so, because of its GOP compression?

“HDV needs to be conformed, or rebuilt, into a consistent GOP structure before it can be output to tape or exported to a file. This conforming can take an exceedingly long time. (For instance, conforming a 30 second sequence consisting of five shots, took over 10 minutes on my PowerBook. Conforming a complex hour-long sequence could take several hours on a G-5.)”

Assuming, of course, that you haven’t done this already. I know some editors who actually load/capture HDV into FCP ass DVCProHD for this reason. Sorry if I missed that you’ve gone through this part already.
