There is a program called Ultimate S pro by Vasst. It will automate the PIP (plus do hundreds of other things quicker). Give it a go. They give you a free 15 day non-restrictive trial.

What do you have going on at the 90% mark? Is there a transition there? An overlay? An effect?
What you could do is try to render out that portion (around the 90% mark) to avi and then insert that back into the project.

More than likely the selection is only 18 seconds long. When you go to render, uncheck the box that says “render selection only”. And if you want the entire timeline to play through, double click the selection bar (blue bar with yellow tips on the end of it). You can also drag one of the yellow tips to extend the selection.

I would start by rendering out to avi the individual nested files (if it stops in the first 5 minutes, your best bet is to start with any introductory media you may have on your time line and then move to the first nested veg).
If you render to avi you will get to keep the portion that rendered up to the point it stopped. This should give you a good idea of where the problem media lies.

Vegas 5 is not supported by Sony for Vista so they will not offer any downloads to make it run well. I doubt your system will become unstable, Vegas may be however. You may just want to install version 7 or 8 of Vegas as both are Vista ready.
Famous last words: “What’s the worst that could happen?” Go a head and install it, just set a restore point before the installation.

If you double click on the jpg file outside of vegas, what program does it open up in? If anything other than windows picture and fax viewer, you may want to reset the default program. Sometimes a program holds a little too tightly to the file formats they are given permission to open.

I haven’t used 5 on a Vista machine (it is not supported) so I do not have a definitive answer on this however I will venture a guess. If you used to be able to do this in Vista and cannot do this now more than likely a microsoft Vista update has been installed that broke this functionality. If it was recently that you could do this, try going back to a system restore point before it stopped working and see what changed on your system between then and now. Notice what hotfixes were applied and what add-ons were installed. Once you narrow it down, you should be able to remove the culprit.
You may want to consider moving up to Vegas pro 8 which is made to work on Vista if you are going to continue working in a Vista environment.

If you right click on the keyframe you want to change, you will see the different options available to you. In between the start keyframe and the end keyframe you will want to add a few more keyframes to get the effect (basically 1 for starting and 1 for ending that effect and then another for starting the new effect and 1 more to end it).

Can you give us some more detail such as your processor type/speed, what files you are working with (AVHC, M2T, AVI, etc.), whether or not you are getting choppy playback from the timeline or from rendered files, if you have any fx added to the events, etc., etc.
We just need some more information to be able to help you. One thing you could try though is to ensure your preview window is set to either Draft or Preview Auto.

If you do low light shooting and fast action, I would recommend you buy another used vx2000. This way they are the same cameras with the same specs and the same settings, etc. If you mix and match you are bringing more issues in to post that do not have to be there. Also, if no one is requesting HD, then save your money and stick with buying a cheaper, used vx2000. You don’t want to trade good low light performance in SD for bad low light performance in HD. 1080 lines of bad footage is still bad, grainy footage.
I would recommend you wait until someone comes around asking for HD and probably by then better prosumer cmos HD cams will be cheaper and better equipped to handle low light and fast action and still be within your budget.
