Opening JPG in Trimmer causes XP crash
This has happened a couple of times, and I hope to prevent anyone else from losing some work. I wanted to open a clip in the trimmer but opened a JPG file by mistake. This has happened before and I just put it down as a quirk in the program, so I made a mental note to NEVER do it. Well, it happened. Total freeze, followed an XP restart and a “Serious Error” message. I was able to restore most of it from an autosave, but still about 15 minutes worth of edits vanished into the digital black hole. I make it a point to save after every major change, but this is an annoyance. Anyone else have this happen?

This is new to me. Never experienced this. But what i know is that
vegas chokes on the tiff image file format…they don’t mix.Steve Rhoden

If you double click on the jpg file outside of vegas, what program does it open up in? If anything other than windows picture and fax viewer, you may want to reset the default program. Sometimes a program holds a little too tightly to the file formats they are given permission to open.

Interesting about the .TIF files. I’ve brought in a couple into my current project for the Forest Service, but only after modifying them in Photoshop and saving them in PSD format before importing. I have a completely different box handling my graphics programs for the very reason of program interaction. I also don’t keep my video and sound editors online except under very controlled conditions for driver updates.
This may be related — this morning when I launched Vegas from the desktop **BOOM** XP restarted. This has happened at random several times over the months but never anything I could repeat at will.
It is a pain because I use a Western Digital 1TB MyBook for archive storage and XP-Pro refuses to boot when it’s connected to either FireWire or USB. Rather than tear out my hair trying to figure that one out, I simply unmount it before shutting down for the night. I am working a couple of deadlines and don’t want to spend the whole day troubleshooting THAT particular problem…it’s not unlike my old 1960 Plymouth Valiant that got me to High School…Just made sure I didn’t have to use reverse very often… 😛

If the jpg (or tif) file is too large for your system to easily handle in the Vegas buffer, this will/can cause crashes/freezes. I can’t bring in 12MP stills from my DSLR unless I bring them in as a group, and even then, it brings my system to its knees. Vegas doesn’t build small thumbnails of these images. It would be a good thing if Vegas allowed the option to resample photos on import.
