I don’t have the answers for you as I don’t have the consumer version of this product. Hopefully someone on here who does will be able to provide some answers to your questions.
Surely someone has the platinum version out there that can help this guy out.

Yep. Just don’t do it. As Mike said, there are great alternatives out there and you don’t need a client that wants you to break the law. A few thousand lost on a gig is way better than the potential of a few thousand later and a lawsuit.
I have lost 2 clients to date over this very issue. I wouldn’t use the music they wanted and they went elsewhere to someone who would. The majority of my other clients who want copyrighted music, when informed about the legality, are fine with using copyright free music. If they really want it, I tell them they need to supply me with a sync license before I can proceed. Then I tell them what they need to do to to get it (contact the copyright holder (usually the record label) and apply for a sync license and then submit the large payment they request for the music to be used in their production). None of those who really wanted it, wanted it bad enough to go through this process and they allowed me to use copyright free music in their production.
Man, that was longer than I wanted it to be. I should have just said, “I agree with Mike”. 🙂

Try this: remove the audio fx that Sony automatically adds to the track (where the track controls are on the left side of the timeline). See if it is one of those in the fx chain. It is odd though that you are having this issue. I have been answering a lot of questions and using Vegas since version 4 and have never had anyone ask about this issue.

Drag & Drop is a windows function that Vegas utilizes. Does it work in anything else? What has changed with your system during the time it stopped working?

Delete your temporary files and if that doesn’t work, just to be on the safe side, you may want to re download Sony Vegas again to make sure you don’t have a corrupt install.
Let us know if that fixes it.

Under File (in Sony Vegas) choose Render As. Render the video to an mpeg-2 format with settings that match your project (such as PAL/NTSC and fps)and encode the video stream only. Then for the audio choose the AC3 template (under Render As) and save the audio separate.
This is how I would do it… but I use DVD Architect so you may want to make sure cyberlink accepts ac3 audio (A DVD standard).

Did you record yourself the files you attempting to play back in Vegas? If so, try one that you did not record such as a mp3 of a song you purchased. Did that make any difference? If it didn’t, did Vegas ever work correctly? Before the new drivers?
Is Vegas the only program that does this?
If you are recording near speakers you may be capturing feedback. You may also want to check your microphone levels to make sure you are not peaking out.

No, I’m not saying that Youtube’s max is 2.2 mbps. What I am saying (or what he is saying) is that youtube is going to compress your video. And for what he saw result-wise that produced the best results for youtube after they do their flash conversion and compression.
I would recommend you archive your footage in a different format that has less compression and higher resolution. If you don’t intend to edit the footage anymore, save it to mpeg-2 and you should be good- just save it to a hard drive for safe keeping.

Keep in mind that the mp4 container was for youtube encodes. So when you watch it on youtube, the quality will be just fine and at the top tier for what youtube allows. The WMV file you made has an extremely high bitrate for anything other than watching it from a hard drive. If you had that online, I would think most would have issues playing it back without it being choppy.
The mp4 file was probably choppy due to your computers capability to playback mp4 files. What player were you watching it in? If Windows Media Player, that is probably your issue. Try VLC (it is free) and it will play those files just fine as long as your computer is up to the task.
