Copywrited Music
Posted by Dave Petteruto on August 7, 2009 at 9:48 pmIf a client insists on using copywrited music in a video, who is responsible, the client or the video editing company?

There’s enough decent copyright-free production music out there as well as inexpensive composers & musicians that this shouldn’t happen. -

August 11, 2009 at 2:48 amYep. Just don’t do it. As Mike said, there are great alternatives out there and you don’t need a client that wants you to break the law. A few thousand lost on a gig is way better than the potential of a few thousand later and a lawsuit.
I have lost 2 clients to date over this very issue. I wouldn’t use the music they wanted and they went elsewhere to someone who would. The majority of my other clients who want copyrighted music, when informed about the legality, are fine with using copyright free music. If they really want it, I tell them they need to supply me with a sync license before I can proceed. Then I tell them what they need to do to to get it (contact the copyright holder (usually the record label) and apply for a sync license and then submit the large payment they request for the music to be used in their production). None of those who really wanted it, wanted it bad enough to go through this process and they allowed me to use copyright free music in their production.
Man, that was longer than I wanted it to be. I should have just said, “I agree with Mike”. 🙂

August 11, 2009 at 3:38 amThanks for the responses. It seems alot of people who want videos made are pretty clueless on this music subject. Does anyone have any reccomendations on where to get decent copyright free music at reasonable prices?
Thanks

Sonicfire ProThose two programs work with you to mold the music to your footage.
Then there are other places where you can download music that is not changeable.
Freeplaymusic.com is one of those.
