Hey Walter, when you get in the Panasonic model, let us know how it pans out. Also, I believe this monitor has some sort of built in waveform (no scope). I’m curious to see if that’s worth anything either.

After further playing around with Compressor, I have found that compressor 2 does in fact create transport streams. If you have COmpressor 2, import your exported FCP movie, apply your MPEG-2 setting and then double click this setting in the batch window. The inspector should now pop up. When that happens click the ‘encoder’ button which is the second button from the top next to summary. Now you should see a list of tabs. Click the extras tab and you’ll notice that the last option is ‘multiplexed MPEG-1/Layer 2 Audio’. Click the box and you should be good to go. This is a new feature in Compressor 2 that was not in Compressor 1, sorry I had lead you astray.

I should add that you should not use FCP to do the conversion, do it outside of the app.

Did this song originate from an mp3? IF so, use quicktime or iTunes or whatever you want to convert it to a 48k 16 bit aiff.

A ha. I understand now. You need to transcode your avi flies into quicktime files with whatever codec you are using, such as DV. FCP will then be able to read those files.

Another way is to lay off your avi files to tape and redigitze into FCP.

You want to capture your screen with FCP? This is not possible, but this application works pretty well after you get it configured correctly.

Well, my PVM20L5/1 (CRT) is considered a reference monitor and it was under $4K. The Sony Luma series is under $4k as is the Panasonic BT1700. It is possible to have a ‘reference monitor’ for under $4K, whether or not you want to believe it is up to you. I seriously doubt there’s anyone out there in consumer land that is buying these monitors to watch “The Sopranos” in HD on cable.

I am simply asking what’s out there and what’s good and if anyone has taken a gander at the LCD models as I’m trying to help out a company that is giving me a lot of work. The guy who is inquiring is interested in an LCD monitor becuase he likes the idea of it taking up less space, but doesn’t want to sacrifice quality for space. I was just wondering how the LCD market is shaping up since it’s not going away, it gets better by the minute, and I have not been able to look at any other monitor besides the 20L5 in person. We can argue the LCD vs. CRT debate again if you want to, but I honestly don’t feel like it. Thanks a lot for your insight.

…and David, thank you for the suggestion, I’ll look into that JVC you are talking about, as it seems to be what I’m looking for and it’s in the proper price range.

Maybe this is all a game of semantics that can be easily misunderstood on forums such as these.
