  • Video and graphics layers and opacity

A little annoying quirk I have noticed with FCP is that say I have a video layer on V1 and a Lower third superimposed over that on V2. If these clips are the first clips in my project and I am fading up from black to these clips, during the fade you can see that the lower third layer rolls through its opacity from 0 to 100 as the fade progresses, therefor, you can see the video underneath the lower third during the fade. It would look much better if it would fade in as if the 2 layers were 1 flat layer. Especially when I make spots and I use a big overlay to cover more than half of the base video layer. When you fade to black the other half of the screen you were covering up suddenly reveals itself for those 5 or 10 frames. A very poor ending to an otherwise good spot.
Is there any method of using the transitions and layers and such to make this look better, or is this just one of those FCP quirks we all have to live with? (Like the timeline not scrolling with the playhead 😉

Import your 2 layer sequence with no fades at the beginning and end into a new sequence and do the fades in/out on the new master sequence.

Nest the items and fade up the nest. Was that what you were trying to say?

Or, another tip from Telly’s book, put a short slug on V3 at the head and tail and fade in and out of that.

This way, the opacity on V1 & V2 doesn’t change, so you don’t see through the text on V2.

Novel for sure. But the thing to do for last 10 years or so. Works great in AE too.

Just to set the record straight, this is not an annoying quirk. FCP is doing exactly what you have asked it to do. Half way through the fade up you have a 50% opaqe item keyed over a 50% opaque item.

Ahhh, the old slug fade. Oldie but goodie.

Are you people kidding me???!!!! All this time I could have been doing a simple slug fade???!!!!! I wish they would have told me that back in college. Sometimes the best solutions are the simplist ideas.
    Thanks everyone.
