Compressor does not demux. Use this instead, it’s free:

so I need to export out of FCP, then compress to MPEG from compressor, then take it into this program to mux the audio with the video stream? Im trying to figure it out, not sure how this works….

Okay, let’s back up a little. You are trying to have an MPEG2 file with embedded audio? FOr what would you need this for (if you don’t mind my asking)?

Yes, If you need to put together the video and audio then this program should do it for you. The processing is called multiplexing (or ‘muxing’ for short). The reverse process is called demultiplexing (or demuxing for short) which you separate the video and audio tracks from each other. If you are using DVD studio pro, it requires the files to be separate (demuxed) which is why compressor keeps the files separate. If you need the file to be multiplexed than mpeg streamclip should be ale to do it for you using the tow separate files from compressor.

    make sense?

I need an MPEG2 file with muxed audio, we are using this as a stream for broadcast…..Compressor crashes every time I even try to bring a clip in….Im using updated on all programs, OS ect…..any ideas??? I cant even believe ANYONE is using compressor…..it is by far the worst compressor program I have ever used. Can I use QT Pro to do MPEG2 files anymore? THey are forcing us to use compressor to do MPEG???

You can choose whatever software you want to make an MPEG2 (just not quicktime 7). Squeeze works pretty well, and there are some others out there (such as bit vice and compression master). Although, compressor works fine for me on a daily basis. What kind of file are you bringing in?

So there is no way to export a muxed MPEG2 file out of FCP or compressor, so my next question is, is there another program that will encode to MPEG2 adn mux the audio at the same time, instead of going through this process? I am trying to put together a workflow for a high pressure boradcast situation, and need a faster solution than this if possible…..thks.

You can use Compression Master 3.1 to do it. This software provides some presets to export QuickTime Movies as MPEG-2 multiplexed streams. Export your timeline as a QT Movie and try it with CM.

The procedure I recommend is to “Export Using Compressor” from Final Cut Pro– this is slightly longer than exporting a reference file and converting it in Compressor — but it makes better compression decisions based upon the original content and actual cut points in your timeline.

In Compressor, you’ll just convert the video to MPEG 2 (about 7.5 meg peak data rate). There are more detailed articles about settings. You’ll produce a “.m2v” file.

Export the audio from FCP as “audio to AIFF”. Open that obscure application called A.pack that FCP installed. Create a stereo audio file to go with your MPEG (again, detailed articles are available).

However, not having used the lates FCP production suite, I don’t know if Apple embedded a decent audio compresser inside of Compressor.

After further playing around with Compressor, I have found that compressor 2 does in fact create transport streams. If you have COmpressor 2, import your exported FCP movie, apply your MPEG-2 setting and then double click this setting in the batch window. The inspector should now pop up. When that happens click the ‘encoder’ button which is the second button from the top next to summary. Now you should see a list of tabs. Click the extras tab and you’ll notice that the last option is ‘multiplexed MPEG-1/Layer 2 Audio’. Click the box and you should be good to go. This is a new feature in Compressor 2 that was not in Compressor 1, sorry I had lead you astray.
