The io is a full service Standard Definition digital and analog capture device for FInal Cut Pro. You can throw pretty much anything at it in terms of analog and digital, audio and video and ingest it in FCP. The io can also be used a standalone a/d/d/a for audio and video if you need such devices. You can monitor video (not audio) with After Effects and Motion. With FCP you can monitor both audio and video.

The Kona LH or LHe is an analog/digital, audio/video, Standard Definition/High Definition PCI-X or PCIe card. You can connect the outputs of your mackie mixer into the analog inputs of the card and digitize this into FCP.

When you use an a/d/d/a you usually use it to connect a digital device to analog device or vice versa. While the io and the KonaLH will in effect act as an a/d/d/a it’s not usually referred to as such. The are capture devices. As long as you are running FCP, you can throw all kinds of analog and digital signals at each of these devices, including S-Video. If you are using S-video with the LH you’ll need a Y/C to S-video adapter cable (it’s just a cable not a box with electronics in it).

You don’t want to change the aspect ratio of your composition as that is for display purposes only, you want to interpret your footage in the project window. Select the clip in the project window (not the composition) and go to File>Interpret Footage>Main (or apple-f). Choose square pixels from the drop down menu, change it from D1/DV. You can then put that footage in a composition that has square pixels. Hit apple-n for a new composition and choose a preset comp with squre pixel dimensions, such as 640×480 or 720×540 square pixels. Drag your sq pixel interpreted footage into the sq pixel comp, and you see what you see. You will have to tell your client to do this too.

I would do a little work for your client. try exporting an animation with an alpha (millinois of colors+) and then take that movie into AE, you can then interpret the footage as square pix or non square pix. See if that works for you and then see if it works for them.

FCP would work, but I don’t think it’ll work with Soundtrack Pro as the io is not core audio compliant.

If you are looking to work in audio only, I’m not sure if the io is the best solution.

Yes, you can download the control panel to select the audio input. You can send it AES and receive line level analog or vice versa.

Have you set your project settings to 59.94? Set your comp to 59.94? When you move through the timeline frame by frame does each frame repeat?

Thanks for catching that. I’m not sure if you can use the firewire control, but my gut says you can. I have done this with DVCPRo HD material from a 1200a. Used the HD-SDI outs and used firewire for control instead of RS-422. You can also get an addenda box (I forget the model #, we used to use one on a DSR-11 to a media 100 back in the day) It’s like the RS-4L or something like that. it’s made by Addenda and called the Rosetta Stone. That will convert your lanc into RS-422. I’m sure your mileage will vary on how well that works. I’d try sending component video/audio to the LH and then use firewire for control. I’d try my best to not bring in the footage without timecode. It’s risky in case of failure. It would be easy do redigitze timecoded clips, but clips with no timecode would take forever. I wouldn’t recommend it.
