    Deranged thought at 4:30 am…
Hope it helps, I won’t remember this when I wake up…

Duplicate your footage, desaturate the bottom copy…

then play with the opacity of the top (unaffected layer)

if you mess up the opacity at the right time.. it SHOULD look like it.. im sure theres a better way of doing this.. but i dunno what it is.. too tired 🙁

the steps should be completely identical, except you use an image instead of a text layer… I haven’t tried the tutorial but it looks pretty straight forward..

I wasn’t sure about it at first (looking at their site) but I’m going to download the demo here pretty soon..

That image map thing looks incredible with how they setup the skies.. might actually be worth the $99 they’re asking..

I haven’t played TOO much with the “Fractal Noise” effect other than to do a forcefield.. I’ve seen it used as smoke in a few tutorials but nothing I can remember..

just play with the settings and masking until you find something you like…

could do a search for “fractal noise smoke tutorial” and see what comes up

  • Never thought about making this effect – I figuerd it’s always been done live.. but yeah – I think it’s possible…

    get footage of the mirror..

you’re gonna wanna motion track it. then get your “reflection” footage and size/crop until it fits in the mirror (apply a mask the shape of the mirror on the “reflection” footage).

    Color correct it…
turn on motion blur for it and comp and the original “mirror”

once it looks good – there’s some sort of “turbulent displace” effect I’ve seen in there.. never used it but I hear it makes it look like its vibrating. apply that to the “reflection” footage and it *SHOULD* be exactly what you’re after….

Hope this helps – if you pull it off let me know I wanna see 🙂

May 21, 2008 at 9:18 am in reply to: Crumbling Wall

As for making the wall fall to pieces… I can think of two ways…

shatter as mentioned (pain but fun) – you’ll have to blow it up with that, crank the crap out of the gravity.. just play with it until you achieve a look you like.. lots of ‘net tutorials etc..

other method is if you know any 3d stuff (3dsMax, Maya, C4D, – blender 3d is free and comparable mostly..)

Sorry we can’t be more specific, but that effect is just one of those that theres no “easy” way to accomplish..

May 21, 2008 at 9:13 am in reply to: AE7 freezes since 4GB RAM update

Id play around with those cache settings some more – just remember that you have TWO cpu’s… do you have multiprocessing enabled?

you might have given them too much ram and aren’t leaving enough for windows to do its job of running your apps..

is ae the only thing that freezes? can you run anything else without lag?

Hope this points you in the right dir..

  • This is an easy one 🙂

if I know what version of AE you’re running hehehe

AE CS3 its normally located in this format..
at the bottom of your comp view theres the following things..

[zoom] [choose grid/guide options] [show mask borders] [current time]

click the [choose grid/guide options] looks like [+] kinda..

theres a bunch of things on there but the first one should be “title/action safe”

click that to turn on or off 🙂

Hey Simon – if you ever figure out what happened make sure you post it in case it happens to any of us and we’re left in the dark poking at it hehehe

“and did you go to Video Copilot to learn how he did it? ”

I don’t think Andrew’s covered that one yet… been waiting for it myself.. he just released “The Bullet” which I’m sure most of you should be up to date on.. covers a lot of 3d compositing into AE… just need my $50 to get my copy *grins*

anyways – he should be making a tutorial for that eventually..
