What Zane is alluding to, is that your timeline codec will compress your stills when rendered. Depending on the timeline settings, they could look better. Try switching the timeline to ProRes and see if it takes care of the artifacts (at all.)

Also, you should really evaluate the quality on a broadcast monitor, not your FCP preview screen (or Digital Cinema Desktop, unless it’s set to Raw)

There’s a chance he encoded them as ProRes. Open one up in QuickTime, don’t worry about the white screen (it means you don’t have the codec. ) Control-I get info; what codec does it say that it’s in?

THe problem is, that he has the XDCAM codec in HIS QuickTime because it came with FCP; I don’t think that Premiere Pro includes the XDCAM codec for QuickTime.

I think the window is closed… – hit CONTROL U (window>arrangement)
Or…that you’ve scrolled up in the sequence window. Check that too.

Fix the first one. Copy. Edit> paste attributes. Make sure your check the filter checkbox.

I’m assuming by ‘doesn’t scroll smoothly’ that you’re looking at it on a tv set/broadcast monitor. I’m also assuming you’re in NTSC.

For a scroll to light right, it has to vertically move an increment of the field rate (60 fields per second).
60, 120, 180, etc.

The issue is that FCP doesn’t have a way for you to control velocity.

Two methods, flicker filter is supposed to help….also Motion has tools to set scrolls exactly to 60lines per sec.

I’ll take it that you have some disk stuck in the top drive?

Reboot the mac. Hold down the mouse. This sends an eject signal. If not? you’re going to have to either attempt to fix it or get a repair shop involved.

I’m unclear. Are you mucking with the Preview settings (which are technically Renders) or are you talking about the export Media choice in the file menu?

Drag a clip to the new sequence icon. This will create a sequence that matches your footage (you won’t need to play with pixel aspect ratio, etc)

Right click and change your Program monitor so the playback resolution is 1/2.

If it’s struggling there, it’s mostly likely because of your processor. If you have to, set it to 1/4. It’ll be blockly but playback.

Duplicate the DVD settings you like. Really, the apple settings are a great starting point.
Vimeo preferred settings. Now the Apple YouTube settings a little higher (a bit more data) – but Vimeo should handle that fine on their end.

Duplicate the Youtube setting as well.

Now, put all of them in a folder in your custom settings. Select them and press the “make droplet” button. You’ll be asked where you’d like the droplet to be saved, and then where you’d like the video to be saved.

Hmm. Technically, you’ll get more vertical resolution at a higher frame rate with 720 (smoother motion) and a wider picture with 1080. Depends on what you’re looking for.
