I’m going with a different guess.

Their systems have something F*ed up in their audio output. Someone whose system doesn’t work…I bet doesn’t work for every video you do (meaning it’s their system, not yours.) Have I heard of something like this before? Nope – never.

I was going to suggest a mono output, but it looks like you’ve done that. If your’e not hearing your voice on a mono output, something is wrong (either with the way you’re setup or the way you’re mixing it.)

So, get simpler. Set the Master output to Mono – put your voice AND ONLY your voice in. Export it. Did it work?
Now, add ONE track of music in the background. Mix it. Export that…did it work.

Somewhere along the line, we’ll figure it out….

When I grab all the video in a sequence and “Replace with AE composition” it does exactly that – all the layers are visible in AE….

It sounds like the clip is damaged. Since QuickTime player is reading it, how about exporting it from QuickTime just to force it to write a new file?

Try Media Info

Second, try right clicking on the clip and choose New sequence from clip in Premiere Pro (don’t know if that’s in 5.0. If not, drag the footage to the “new” icon in the Project Panel.)

Two suggestions (not sure if either will make a difference.)

1) Open Adobe Media Encoder before you open the Export media dialog and see if that makes a difference.
2) If you’re rendering, check the Use Previews button on the Export settings dialog.

You could (should) have been always able to IMPORT…what’s cool in MC 5 (and 5.5) is the ability to use AMA – avid media access.

If it’s just QuickTime files, you should be able to set AMA to look at a folder and it’ll just ‘be’ in your avid. There are workflow issues…but it’s quick and fast way to edit avchd material.

Actually, I’m willing to bet that the original file is 720×480 but being displayed at 853×480.

When you get your video into compressor, go to the geometry tab.
It should detect that the frame size is 720×480 and has a pixel aspect ratio of 1.2
IF NOT, from the drop down for Frame size, choose CUSTOM and change the pixel aspect to NTSC CCIR 601/DV 16:)

Try and and let’s find out if it worked!

I forget which version of compressor you have – v2 or v3? I feel like it’s 3.

There are a couple of ‘general’ workarounds you might try before we have to play with nuts and bolts.
Try doing an export to QuickTime (via QuickTime movie, not QuickTime convert); then feed that to compressor.
Or if that’s what you’re doing now, try a direct export to compressor.

Don’t send the whole show – just a 30 sec sample of the compressed area.

If you built your own compressor settings (like I’m guessing for youtube), try really torquing out the data rate, Double it and see if you have the same problem. Triple it if you have to.

Report back and let’s find out!

You’re going to have to uninstall 4 to install 5. No, you won’t lose your users, settings or media.
Your users may be incompatible (and avid usually recommends building new users.)
Your Projects will be fine – it leaves them alone. Ditto with your media.

Yes, backup your projects and users (but you’re backing up your whole system, right?)

Yup – its a standard artifact of video – the crop filter (as Ann pointed out) should fix it.
