    Hello,

I have a couple of snags in my workflow, and I wanted to see if there were any remedies.

    1. My master must be in MPEG2, but when I export, it takes as much as a minute for the encoding status window to come up. And encoding seems to take a while, even if I render the spot before exporting. (Another editor in house says PrPro 5 is slower to render than previous versions.) AVI, Windows, etc. do not have this delay, and PrPro 3 didn’t seem to. But 5 does. (Another forum seemed to indicate loading version 7.5.5 of Quick Time Player, which made no sense. I loaded it, and it didn’t help.)

    2. When I load my project, the media initially comes up off line, then reloads. It is not on a network drive, but it is on a drive within the CPU, not C. This is more of an annoyance, and I wonder if someone can direct me to a setting to reset.

My system settings should be below. Thanks for any help!

    Premiere Pro 5.0.3
Adobe Creative Suite 5 Production Premium
    Windows 7 Pro SP1
    64-bit
    Intel Core i5 CPU
    8G RAM

Two suggestions (not sure if either will make a difference.)

    1) Open Adobe Media Encoder before you open the Export media dialog and see if that makes a difference.
    2) If you’re rendering, check the Use Previews button on the Export settings dialog.

    Best,

Checking “use previews” will definitely speed up encode time, but keep in mind that the timeline preview is likely set at MPEG2 I-frame (which is what PPro CS5 uses as it’s default preview render format for any screen size).

Depending on what video format you’re using, etc…some users would rather the Media Encoder use the original footage and process all the effects on the timeline, etc. as it does one transcode directly to the desired export format, as opposed to first “rendering” to a preview format like MPEG I-frame and then making another MPEG 2 pass on that based on your desired Media Encoder target.

All that being said, I’ve run into situations where a particular set of effects befuddles Media Encoder and it re-executes them improperly (or, in the case of some third party plugins in the early days of CS5, doesn’t execute them at all…) and the best way that I found to solve the issue was to simply render the timeline and check “use previews” in the Media Encoder.

…so it will definitely be faster, it’s just important to understand why that’s the case for ongoing reference in my opinion.

On the “media offline” issue… I don’t think you’re seeing a problem. Adobe changed the load behavior of PPro based on lots of input from many of us who had large projects and when we opened them, the “project loading” thermometer would pop up and sit there until all the media had loaded, but since nothing visual was happening, many of us couldn’t tell if we had locked up or crashed…or we were actually loading.

With a big enough project, you could be sitting there with a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach for 5 minutes and then….(whew)…the project presents itself. All was probably fine, but it felt a little too precarious when a user feels, possibly irrationally so, as if they’ve dodged a bullet every time they start a work session.

I think this exact irrational fear of the application seeming to be lethargic on loading was a significant portion of PPro’s somewhat undeserved reputation for not being able to handle large projects.

Sounds like you might have a Matrox box. There is a long delay in opening the export media window due to a conflict with a Dolby Digital file when the Matrox drivers are installed.

Rename the SurCodeWrapper.vca file on your system – typing .bak at the end of the file (for example, rename as SurCodeWrapper.vca.bak). This file is installed by Adobe Premiere Pro in the following folder:
    C:Program FilesAdobeAdobe Premiere Pro CS5MediaIOcodecs

The export media window should open immediately now, and changing the export format should be quicker as well.

Yes, Eric. I have a Matrox box, and I apologize for not mentioning that in my post.

That got it! Thanks for saving my bacon!

    Hello Tim,
Thanks for the prompt reply. I will chill and be more discplined in taking out obsolete files. But PrPro is the only NLE that does this.

    Thanks again!

I have another Matrox issue: I like to post everything Lower Field first. But when I get outside mpgs, I get a prompt: The field type Upper Field First is not supported for the NTSC video format.

I’d guess if I changed preferred fields, it would say The Lower Field is not supported. And I don’t want to deinterlace, to me that looks fuzzy.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

    🙂

There are a lot of things that only PPro does…

    That’s why I use it.
