Well, MPEG2 compression was designed to fool the eye on video (the way the jpeg does with stills.)

But titles? Especially moving titles? Tim’s dead on – it’s the extra details.

WIth VBR, the encoding is ‘robbing peter to pay paul’ and actually peaking higher than the average bitrate. Which is what VBR is meant to do.

Althought at that high of a bitrate, I’m surprised theres a problem.

Haven’t seen it – but have you tried pushing it to compressor via Send to (instead of an external QuickTime file?)

There are two import switches in the avid you might have gotten ‘wrong’

First, the DVD is lower field
Second, want to have it adjust to Crop/Pad for DV line difference.

Either could invert the fields.

F4v is using the h.264 codec – Mpeg4 part 10
FLV is using the On2 VP6 codec – from Sorenson.

Generally, the FLV works with older flash (and weaker systems)
F4V is using h.264 which is a more efficient codec at the same bandwidth.

I fed into google, FLV vs. F4v and got this article (which is mostly right – it’s wrong about what kind of codec the F4V is)

I’m using 5.5 (so I know it’s different…but…)

when I hit the encoder, on the video tab, if I scroll down, I have an Aspect switch, which I set to widescreen. Sorry, I don’t have CS4 around….

does that help at all?

For QuickTime in general it’s called the Scene detector
An AE script that does the same thing called Magnum

I got QuickTime 7 itself to export an uncompressed AVI – QuickTime 7 – not QuickTime X. QuickTime X wouldn’t recognize, but QuickTime X did fine.

Additionally, I went to MPEG streamclip and chose “AVI” – but the only uncompressed item I saw was FCP’s 4:2:2 uncompressed, which probably won’t work on a PC, but its worth testing. while writing this post, I sent a 7 min clip to see if it worked. The advantage of MPEG Streamclip will be batch processing (and the cost can’t be beat.) Time: it took about RT about 8 min. It was 61 gigs (thats’ about right for uncompressed 1080i 30).

But I fear that file is a FCP uncompressed codec, not a fully uncompressed work-with-a-pc code.

It’s building the AVI that makes it difficult. QuickTime 7 probably can do this for you (but no batch! 🙁 ) – not FCP or Compressor (in this case- they’ll pick the wrong uncompressed codec – something that’s not compliant with the AVI- a non standard codec.)

These files are going to be in your Main Library/Application support
Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support
and
Macintosh HD/Library/Audio

In the Application Support most of the elements will be in Final Cut Studio and Livetype.
You can move The LiveFonts, the DVD STudio Pro folder and the Motion folder.
You’ll need to ‘point out’ to the apps where these folder now are in the preferences.

The audio folder? The Apple Loops is your ‘big’ folder.
Then tell STP where those files are.

Not deal breaking, just painful.

If you screw it up, don’t worry – you can always install these elements separately from the installer discs.

First, read waht Michael Phillips said TWICE.

If you’re willing to forgo that….

[Reuben Speight] “Is there a faster way of importing all these files (and if possible keeping the subfolder system) into Avid other than doing them all individually?”

Can’t keep the folder structure.

Can drag and drop from your native file system (just put a Finder window or windows 7 explorer window above media composer. Drag and drop import works just fine.
