  • CS4 – Losing My Widescreen During Encode

I have a Premiere Project with the following setup:

    Footage was captured as 720 X 480 (1.2121).
Sequences are set with the DV – NTSC Widescreen 48kHZ built-in preset, which matches what the footage is.

I was somehow able to encode a Quicktime MOV file that preserved the original aspect ratio. I believe I did it by selecting the Quicktime format and the DV NTSC Widescreen preset when I went into export the media. However, when I do that now, having not changed a thing in the Premiere project, the final video comes out looking like a pan-and-scan movie (or like the footage from a normal 720 X 480 – 0.9091 setting).

Can anyone help me figure out how to get the encoder settings so that I can render this with the aspect ratio preserved?

    Thanks!
    Keith

    I’m using 5.5 (so I know it’s different…but…)

when I hit the encoder, on the video tab, if I scroll down, I have an Aspect switch, which I set to widescreen. Sorry, I don’t have CS4 around….

    does that help at all?

    Hi Keith,

For web or computer playback, export as 854×480 using 1.0 Pixel Aspect Ratio (square pixels). This will preserve the 16:9 aspect in any player, as most do not recognize non-square pixels.

QT is notorius in not reconizing the PAR.
I would use the VLC player instead.

    Jeff,

I have an encoding pre-set that is made for Widescreen, so I’m already working with that. Actually, I tried Jeff Pulera’s suggestion of changing to Square Pixels and it worked perfectly.

Thanks for your help, though. I was getting really nervous because I couldn’t remember how I did it the first time!

    Ann,

When I did it the first time (which I can’t remember how I did it!), it played in Quicktime with no stretching. However, having a VLC player as another resource will be helpful in the future, I’m sure. Thanks for suggesting it!
