At this time, FCP doesn’t handle VOB files. They have to be in a format that is friendlier to video editing;

As others have pointed out, MPEG Streamclip is the tool of choice (as long as the video isn’t copy protected)

Almost.

Best option?
DVD > MPEG Streamclip (either Uncompressed or ProRes)> FCP (either uncompressed or prores> then out to DVD-9 (although if it’s under 2 hrs, a DVD-5 should be fine.)

An uncompressed (or nearly uncompressed ProRes) workflow will do the least damage to your footage.

Cory – System Profiler shows you everything on your mac.

It sees the firewire bus – but nothing attached to it. So I KNOW FCP can’t see it either. Try plugging in a firewire drive (and/or USB drive) and see how systme profiler changes.

Nope, you’ve correctly found a limitation of the FCP>Motion template workflow.
I suggest you use the Feedback form that apple puts in FCP. There’s nothing obvious you’re missing.

FCP doesn’t permit two fonts types in ANY of it’s built in text boxes either – so it’s probably a limitation of FCP.

Either two text boxes or use something like Automotion

Own After Effects CS5? The new rototool is great. Even still, you’re going to have to do this frame by frame; it’s brutal (but I’ll admit, I had a good laugh and then felt bad for you.)

I don’t think there is any real magic way to handle it. I like the idea of adding other trees to try and make the other areas look cluttered. But it looks like Roto City here.

Stick to h.264s and Apple’s presets are a great way to start. The 128GB? Not needed (and may not work in many Blu Ray players.)

FCP 7 (really compressor), Encore, Toast will all make blu ray. Higher quality from h.264 over MPEG-2

Test the presets early to see what sort of quality before you worry about bitrates; your biggest issue isn’t going to be this: it’s going to be if your blanks work in their blu-ray players. It’s only a 60-70% crapshoot (another reason to test early.)

You can’t get it ‘superior’ to what was shot. How exactly are your family DVD’s degrading? DVDs are digital media – they last for quite a bit. They ‘fail’ not degraid.

The DVD9 (not prores, MPEG-2, the DVD Spec only permits MPEG-2 video) look better than the DVD-5 because they’re less compressed. Bonus – you worked in a ProRes original timeline, which did less damage to the footage than the DV timeline did.

So:
DVD > MPEG Streamclip> DV > MPEG-2> DVD-5 will look worse than
DVD > MPEG Streamclip > DV in a prores timeline> LARGER MPEG-2> DVD-9

Making it blu ray will only blow it up.
