Ok, what do you mean by this. Export it how? To where? Compressor? QT movie? QT Conversion?
Where are you looking at the video? QT? QT player X (Which will scale up files)Sorry to be pesky but the devil is in the details.

I get it- you’re trying to save money. Nope, there isn’t a codec that will let you (reasonably) save space and still be editable in FCP. Drives are really, really cheap at this point. Figure 13 gigs/an hour. 1 TB drive is less than $100; so ~75 hours? that’s about $1 per hour ($2 if you grab a second drive.

Banding can be an issue with subtle gradients.[Bogdan Brak] “In my animation I am simulating light flickerings and playing with the cameras field of depth – blur adjustments while the cam is focussing etc… finally I’ve also used a vignette with noise. And everytime the light is flickering or the depth of field is changning, the compressed file looks terrible. There are 5 colorrings… no smooth gardients. And it’s neccessary to mention that almost all the time the light is flickering => I have all the time this bandering rings. 😉 (which actually is not funny xD)

Let’s give it the highest bitrate (25), 2 pass. If at the max bitrate/2 pass you can’t get it to look good, we’re going to have to try something else. What what that be? A codec meant for post production editing and is a much larger file, but may playback on your target machines.Best,

David is dead on – there will be no advantage to do anything beyond capture as DV files.
But you should make at least a duplicate copy of the work; hard drives are fragile (over the measurement of a couple of years.)Best,

FCP exports the entire timeline – do you have any stray anything at the 3 min point? If so, make an In/Out on the timeline before you export.

Two quick and dirty items.
Does iMovie see it? Sometimes iMovie sees decks (especially consumer decks) that FCP misses.
Does System profiler (in your utilities) see that something is attached to the firewire chain?Best,
