  • How to enhance image detail?

Unfortunately I had the detail turned down on one of my cameras in my multicam shoot so it looks noticeably softer. While I can and probably will indeed soften the rest a bit more, there has to be something I can do other than use the sharpen filter built into FCP. I don’t know exactly what the detail on a camera does but I imagine it specifically speaks to possibly edge enhancing and the like. If you folks have any ideas of external filters (even if they aren’t free) I would be more than appreciative.

You could try NEAT Video, it is a great tool to have at your disposal. Alongside it’s excellent noise reduction capabilities is the “Smart Sharpening” feature (Basic: one sharpness slider, or Advanced: adjustment of sharpness/noise by either- Channel (Y, Cr, Cb) or Frequency (High, Mid, Low)).

There is a free demo, it only applies to 640×480 pixels, has a watermark and high-bitdepth rendering is disabled. Be sure to buy the Pro version if your working in HD.

Here’s a link to the product feature’s page on their website-

Be aware that LONG render times are involved!

Without seeing the footage, it’s hard to say, but more than once I’ve been able to sharpen a tiny bit, and lower black levels on footage to make it acceptable.

How do the unsharp mask or sharpen filters look?

The sharpening in Compressor is more advanced than the tools in FCP

I already own this filter. I never thought about using it for anything other than noise reduction.

I have used the Lyric unsharpen mask filter in FCP and it is superior to the FCP filter. I have also played briefly with the sharpen filters in FX Factory and they have a lot of options for sharpening. The brief play was fairly impressive.

So if you want to keep it inside FCP then try FX Factory or Lyric.

I have found a page with what appears to be every filter that FX Factory makes. Did you use any one of the sharpening filters specifically?

I will look into this but I do not believe this will be extreme enough.

    Too noisy and artificial.
