A raid really won’t make a significant difference; the bottleneck is the MPEG2 compression;
I’m not sure that Toast is using all the processors. You should check by running toast and also running Activity Monitor (which has a gauge to show off processor performance.) You may find that using Compressor, using multiple cores provides a faster encode than Toast does. I don’t know if Toast will know to not reconvert valid MPEG-2 files when making a DVD

h.264 is really a distribution format: you’re not going to have a ‘best quality’ version; it’s going to be compressed period. You can give it a higher bitrate = larger file = less compressed; but for ‘best quality’ we’d go uncompressed.
But I sense that you’re really trying to just have two files, one of the playing better…the other better looking.
As far as the specific machine specs: test early, test often. You’ll have to specifically test that machine to see how decent it plays back. Just test it out on the athlon. Build the largest file first and see how the Athlon handles it. You may find that the system is fine with the best 1080 file.
Settings:
Use the Adobe Media Encoder as a starting point:
Format: h.264
Preset to pick: 1080p 29.97 high quality (pick a different one if you’re working at a different frame rate)Report back and we’ll go from there.

This is going to be nightmarish not because of the screen (I could do that screen in Motion with a better keyer) – no the problem is the duck is green.
I’d use the CS5 Roto tool to mostly worry about the head, then I’d go back and use a ‘solid’ keyer like Primatte. Know that Imagineer has a GREAT roto tool – not intuitive (nor cheap) but great for this sort of work.

You’re talking about fragmentation. OSX has a process called Hot File Adaptive Clustering that really reduces the amount of fragmentation in general.
What to format the drive? It’s argued that HFS+ non-journaled is better than journaled for media drives, because the ‘journalling’ information means that writing times are just a little longer – and we need speed at all costs.
Last, you bring up a question from an earlier post.
If you’re working with a single drive for media – you’re in danger of that drive dying and losing everything. The ‘safest’ way is a RAID 5 and a backup (also!).A Raid 0 takes two disks and treats them as one drive. Advantage – all the space plus extra speed. Disadvantage, one dies killing all the data on both drives.
A Raid 1 takes two disks and mirrors one to the other. Advantage redundancy. Disadvantage? half the space and twice as long writing times (bad for video)A Raid 5 uses 4 or more disks and stores some extra parity information on the other drives. Advantage – redundancy but you lose 25% of each drive to go to the redundancy information. If a drive dies, you just replace it.

FCP isn’t optimized to edit with h.264 files (which can be used in everything from cellphones, DSLRs, BluRay dvds.)
Will FCP allow you to put it in the timeline? Yes. Does it work well? Not so much.
You’ll need the original cards…canon has a plugin for FCP Log and Transfer – I think it works in FCP 6.

I’m sure it’s a mistake to add it – I doubt you’re still reading this forum Teresa, but…
The monitor you have does not have the correct temperature of ‘white’, nor the correct color gamut, nor the necessary refresh speed to act as a broadcast monitor. You can’t get it ‘close enough’ either. It either has to be engineered for this specific type of use (and connected correctly) or it just won’t work.
Additionally, you have to connect video typically through a hardware card; your computer is in RGB space and broadcast video is in YCr’Cb’ space.
Bob is known as quite the curmudgeon; but he was 100% right; this screen cannot be calibrated for broadcast use.

Can I ask what didn’t work? There are some features in OSX that overlap FCP features. Addtionally, we can ‘fix’ some of the more common problems (If I can get it so you dont’ have to spend money, etc)

All inside of FCP? Sure. I tried this. FCP was VERY unhappy with me when I did this.
Create a sequence. Open Sequence settings (CMD 0)
Set it to the following: Custom Aspect ratio. Width 32 Height 18 (I wanted to do 16×9, but who knew FCP won’t let you do any numbers below 16?)
Pixel aspect Ratio Square
No Field Dominance.Put your footage in that sequence.
Then throw it into a regular 16×9 DV NTSC anamorphic sequence. You’ll get 32×18, but it’s pretty much what you wanted.
