Text formatting in templates
Create a simple title in Motion, format the text in one text box using 2 different fonts. Save as template. Open template in FCP and go text controls. Change text. Lose 2nd font. Can’t even keep same font, different weight.
Is this a limitation of FCP? I know the workaround would be to use separate text boxes, but the point of templates is to be able to quickly change the content. If you’re doing lower thirds, and everyone’s name and title are different lengths, it makes designing pretty tough.
Suggestions?

You need to do it as separate text boxes. Don’t know why it would be tough if the names are different lengths, as long as your text boxes are aligned the way you want them.

why? If you want to left justify the name
John Smith on one line using 2 text boxes
and then change the next example to
Alexander Vinokourov
the text box for the last name Smith, if left in place, would be overlapped by the ‘nder’ in Alexander. It’s simply one of the most basic things you’d want to do with a template. I gather that it’s actually a limitation of FCP, perhaps a limit to the way Motion was integrated with it. -
Nope, you’ve correctly found a limitation of the FCP>Motion template workflow.
I suggest you use the Feedback form that apple puts in FCP. There’s nothing obvious you’re missing.FCP doesn’t permit two fonts types in ANY of it’s built in text boxes either – so it’s probably a limitation of FCP.
Either two text boxes or use something like Automotion

There is a workaround. Use two text objects in Motion as Mark suggested. Add a third text object and call it null. Turn the layer off.
Apply the link behavior to the 2nd text object (the one that represents the last name. Use it’s X position as the target parameter. Drag the null into the source object and use the text size as the source parameter. Change the scale to 2:1. Use the size offset to align the the first two text objects. Save your template.
In FCP replace your “John Smith” with whatever long name you have. When the 1st name overlaps the 2nd name, just increase the size of the null text to slide the 2nd name over.
