I was under the impression that using “Export to Compressor” from within Final Cut was working slower because it is aware of (and accounting for) all of the transitions. In other words, putting more effort into those areas.
I’m not sure if this is actually true, however. If it is it would be a reason to put up with the extra time. But if I’m just being foolish then exporting this way is a huge waste of time!
Does anyone actually know the answer to this?

You should buy a firewire PCI card to put in your machine. Better to give the hard drive its own card so it’s not sharing bandwidth with other firewire devices you have plugged into your computer.
And since you’re buying a card it COULD be either 400 or 800 speed. Not that you have to get an 800 drive, I’m just pointing out that it’s possible.

Is the hard drive formatted as a Mac drive? If there’s nothing on it I suggest re-formatting it with Disc Utility as a Mac OS Extended format. (Journaling “On” unless this drive is going to be a scratch disc for a video or motion graphics application.)
Hopefully that will do the trick. Let us know if it doesn’t.

You run it on your Mac and it lets you log into a Windows machine over a network. It might not solve all your problems, but you should certainly try it out to see what it can do for you.

This is an add-on to #3, but it’s worth adding on:
Making sure the groom’s cell phone is OFF. He may think that it’s not a problem since he has it on silent mode, but if it is on at all it can cause wireless interference when it checks in with the tower.

Restart while holding down the mouse button. The CD drive should eject. Put your OS CD in and restart again holding down the “C” key. That will boot off the disc.
At that point I’d find the disc utility and repair the permissions on your hard drive. Then look for the “Startup Disc” selection in the menu and switch back to the internal drive and restart.
If THAT doesn’t do anything restart the computer. AFTER you hear the boot up chime (NOT BEFORE!) hold down the shift key. That goes into Safe-boot-mode. If that works try to re-install the update.
If all of this fails, do you have access to a 2nd Mac? You may have to hook both computers up with a firewire cable and restart your broken machine while holding “T” down. It will become a firewire drive on the 2nd Mac’s desktop. Open it up, get all of your files off and then boot it up from the CD again, erase the hard drive and reinstall the OS.
Before you do that, someone else here may have an idea. That would be a last-case scenario if nothing else works.

There is copy protection on the file so you can’t use it in Final Cut or use any software to convert it.
You’re only allowed to listen to it on your computer, an iPod, or burn it to a normal audio CD. Personally, I really like burning audio CDs. It’s very convinient because you can play them in any CD player, which is a useful feature.

Failing to hit the “stop record” button when you thought you did. This leads to nice footage of the floor as you carry the camera to the next spot, nice footage of you setting up the shot, and nice footage of you pre-focusing, then BAM, the shot ends as you hit the record button, thus stopping the tape.
Not that this has ever happened to me.

I believe that it can read and write FAT volumes and only read NTFS volumes. I think you can only have FAT volumes that are 32 GB or smaller, though.
If you’re trying to put a drive in to get files off of then you should be fine. If you’re trying to make this a working hard drive in a Mac then you should probably copy the data off and re-format it in a Mac standard.
If you’re simply talking about accessing a PC from a Mac over a network then none of this mattes at all. In that case it’s Windows that is accessing the file and passing it off to OS X. None of these rules matter in that case.

Speaking as someone who moved from Premiere 6 to Final Cut 4 I can say that you shouldn’t be too lost. I’ve used Media 100 before and I use an Avid at work now, but of all those the transition from Premiere to Final Cut seemed the easiest.
I know Premiere 6 is a lot different from Premire Pro, but they’re both Adobe products which puts you a bit closer to Final Cut than any other NLE system in terms of the way they think, in my opinion. Yes, there will be differences, but you won’t be totally lost.
(Also, I know you don’t want to hear about Mac vs. PC, but honestly, the ability to have my editing computer online without worrying about adware/spyware is a BIG plus.)
