  • No Sound from iTunes Song on Timeline

Posted by Jerry Gonzalez on April 12, 2006 at 1:19 am

I was hoping to pay for a song via iTunes to use in an inhouse video, but I am unable to “hear” the song on the timeline. I have tried every audio conversion but I still get no music.

Any ideas on the best way to purchase music for a timeline – non commercial project?

    Thanks,

There is copy protection on the file so you can’t use it in Final Cut or use any software to convert it.

You’re only allowed to listen to it on your computer, an iPod, or burn it to a normal audio CD. Personally, I really like burning audio CDs. It’s very convinient because you can play them in any CD player, which is a useful feature.

It’s technically against the law to circumvent the copy protection on iTunes downloads, even for non-commercial uses, so we cant tell you how to convert it to something usable in FCP on this site…but it is possible. Google is your friend.

iTunes files are designed not to play in professional editing software.

There are very few copyrighted songs that are legal to use in any edited project.

“Royalty-Free” or “Buy-Out” music libraries are designed for this purpose.

You can check ebay, Google or here are a few you can look at.

You can audition online and buy individual songs or order entire CDs.

Many thanks. Didn’t realize I was cutting close to the DMR issue. Of course, everything here is above the table. Appreciate the quick replies.

    Best wishes.

I believe iTunes songs DO work in iMovie though . . . for personal non professional projects.

Of course this is all silly. Everyone uses everything as a temp track – edit rooms around the world are full of folks cd collections to try out for size. When you get closer to the finish, these either become the guide for a composer or you start making phone calls and brace yourself for sticker shock, whether that be for festival rights only or broadcast / theatrical, etc. the law is intened to prevent the music’s redistribution without paying. And until you do this, and it leaves the edit room, it is by all sense and purpose for personal use just like in imovie. Itunes just makes this a hassle and prevents nothing of which they are supposedly concerned.
