Quicktime 7.4 was designed specifically to keep Apple repair depot’s busy until the next release.
Mission accomplished!
Now can they fix the Gamma issues?

Apple will rename Final Cut Pro to Final Cut Prosumer. They will also announce a version of QuickTime that works, but not deliver one.

The only weird 5.1 issue we are seeing is with After Effects. We can’t get realtime playback of HD material in a RAM preview. v4 and v5 did not have this issue.
It’s as if the graphics card is an AGP card with bandwidth limitations. Turning off AE’s Video Preview “solves” the issue.

Everyone stop freaking out. In Apple’s infinite wisdom, they attempted to pare down the number of codecs listed and culling the older codecs. BUT, they are all still there. Go to QuickTime preferences, to the Advanced tab and click Show Legacy Codecs. Considering the gamma issues of H.264, they have some nerve relegating Sorenson to a legacy format.

January 15, 2008 at 2:34 am in reply to: FCP: losing saturation when exporting .mov fileKeep in mind that that checkbox is not available on systems without FCP. Thus, a consistent viewing experience is impossible. The basic issue is that the QuickTime team has totally screwed the pooch when it comes to Gamma. Apple apps can’t keep it straight, let alone QuickTime itself. This all stems from in-fighting within Apple with not a sane voice overriding all the stupidity.
This should be fixed. TV has a 2.2 or 2.2.2 (SD/HD)Gamma, film standard is 2.6 and Apple thinks that some things should be 1.8 while others should be 2.2. Adobe had been pulling their hair out trying to work with Apple on this one.
While Apple touts how they conform to open standards, when it comes to codecs, this is one standard they are applying the Microsoft way.

December 21, 2007 at 9:32 am in reply to: Avid appoints a New CEO – one that specializes in mergers!I think they should take the plunge and go with Hairvid.
The fact of the matter is that Avid has lost their focus. The problem has been that they have been in acquisition mode and not focusing on their core products.
How many more years will it take for them to, for instance, fix the QuickTime Import and Export so that colors are accurately converted? Heck, why fight city hall? Why not support it natively in the timeline along with their other media formats?
How many more times will they lie to customers about how and when they are going to open up the platform? XML? I’m having flashbacks of the old Quantel.
The new corporate theme song at Avid is Too Much, Too Little, Too Late
P.S. Dan, Happy Holidays. I hope the family is doing well.

Adolfo,
Will this release fix the bugs in the new Motion Blur code along with the constant battle of gamma issues?

One more thing, we have seen issues with ATTO’s latest Celerity driver, 3.21 in which it will randomly lose communication with Medea FCR2(X). Stay with 3.10.

The only bug I have seen so far is with KonaLH 5.0. If you enable the Desktop mode on the Kona card. Then, attempt to launch After Effects 8.01, After Effects will crash.
If, however, you have the Kona card in any other mode (e.g. black, test pattern) then everything is fine.

Bob & Walter,
As an integrator, I can tell you that there are no more Mac Pros with Tiger included, as of a week ago.
Since there are no modification to the hardware, the old Tiger discs included with Mac Pros, which include either the 10.4.9 or 10.4.10 install DVDs do work.
It’s just a matter of tracking down those discs.
For many, sticking with FCP 6.0.1, 10.4.10, QT 7.1.6 seems to be a happy combination. While a number of issues, on paper, seem to be corrected with the FCP 6.0.1, 10.4.11, QT 7.3 combination, we have not seen enough real world metrics to bless it just yet.
