Keep in mind that ALL new CPUs from Apple are now shipped ONLY with Leopard. Even though Tiger still works on the latest shipping MacPros, the numb nuts at Apple have decided you do not need stability. The numb nuts have determined that reality is a BAD thing. The numb nuts won’t even give you an option of getting a Tiger install disc.
Also keep in mind that the retail Tiger discs, unless they happen to be 10.4.10, will not boot Quad Core CPUs.
Thus, you are forced to STEAL a Tiger install disc.
Thank you Apple. Reality be damned!!!

Interestingly enough, all of you point out the reason that Sony has announced an XDCAM-HD format that will run at a higher data rate, I think 50Mb/sec, and a 4:2:2. I call it XDCAM v2. When your XDCAM-SD starts out with more bandwidth than your HD version, something doesn’t smell right.
I would love it if Jan could speak to the virtues of the upcoming AVC-Intra. It looks like we’ll get the first 10-bit camcorder out of it. Before a flame starts, the Digi-Beta camcorders are 8-bit, whereas the studio decks are 10-bit.
Jan you can tell us about the new efficiencies in AVC-Intra. Also, why is it not an ideal editing codec? Is it due to the processing overhead needed?

One thing you can do to protect yourself, especially in an offline process, is specify how many changes they get and how much it will cost for additional changes. We have found that once a client is on notice that things can cost more, they suddenly get more diligent and organized.
As a result, this helps to prevent overages and clearly defines responsibility.

I believe that deck is a PAL version of the DigiBeta. It has the same ports as the DVW-A500. There are multiple RS-422 ports on it.

Even if it did, the card still should not allow a feedback loop to occur.

I see this issue all the time. What is happening is that Kona card is trying to lock to the input. Similarly, I saw goofiness when capturing when the input of the Kona was connected to the same deck.
I think what we have here is a feedback loop caused by a bug in the drivers.

Well said. I would opine, however, that Gigabit filesharing still has issues with scalability. It also has issues with busy networks and servers. As packets start getting out of order from the increased traffic, it becomes more difficult for the TCP buffers to keep everything in order, which then causes dropped frames.
Someone mentioned that Fibre Channel was the only fiber-based solution out there. O’ contrar monfrar! Check out Infiniband. It’s very fast, 20Gbit, for starters, and components are half the cost of Fibre Channel. The current missing ingredient is Infiniband storage. Though, I think CalDigit’s new stuff is Infiniband, yet they don’t mention it by name.

Quite frankly, if you are working in mostly DVCProHD, then you really don’t need a faster RAID. The data rate per stream needed maxes out at around 14MB/second, worst case scenario, depending on resolution and frame rate.
In general, the G-Speed XL is faster, not only in its throughput, but also in its ability to format/rebuild, and its ability to maintain a higher data rate while in a deprecated state.
