Audio Out Into Powered Speakers

Hi Martin –
as you realize now, you cannot use the MAC audio output to monitor your audio, you must use the XLR outputs from the Kona to do this.

There are many many solutions to your problem, but the least expensive solution is to get a small Behringer Audio mixer, which will cost you anywhere between $80 – $300 dollars. Remember that the XLR outputs of the Kona must go into the 1/4″ TRS inputs of any inexpensive mixer from Behringer, Mackie, Yamaha, soundcraft, etc, so you can’t just use XLR mic cables that you have lying around. The Control Room Monitor outputs will be 1/4″ TRS outputs as well, so you will need these cables too, to go from the mixer out to your powered speakers.

Some people simply refuse to get a mixer, and just want a volume control, so you can get the Mackie Big Knob for this, but this costs as much or more, as a small mixer, and will do the same job.

If you want a model #, I suggest the Behringer Xenyx 1204FX for $169, but there are lots of models to choose from, and you can get something even cheaper to do this job. You can browse thru websites like American Musical, Musicians Friend, ZZ Sounds, or go to your local Guitar Center or Sam Ash Music to find a cheap mixer for this.
They will all work.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the suggestion. I ended up with the Big Knob and am going into a better pair of powered speakers now. I’ve got a lot of control and the sound is nearly as good as when I was in the recording studio.

The only problem now is that the audio is in sync with the video when displayed on the component monitor attached to the Kona LHe, but is a couple of frames ahead of the video when the clip is played on the FCP canvas. Could I beg a solution from you for that?
