  • Avid appoints a New CEO – one that specializes in mergers!

According to Avid’s website, they now have a new full-time CEO….they announced that Gary Greenfield has been named chairman of the board and chief executive officer (CEO) effective immediately.

Along with a lot of SEC-driven disclosure statements about how much stock he gets from this deal, his “previous experience” is the most interesting paragraph:

“Greenfield has been CEO of GXS since 2003, a leading worldwide provider of business-to-business integration, synchronization and collaboration solutions. Since December 2003, he has also been an operating partner with Francisco Partners, a leading technology-focused private equity firm.

Previously, he served as CEO of Peregrine Systems where he managed the restructuring of their business; president and CEO of MERANT; and while CEO of INTERSOLV, they merged with Micro Focus to form MERANT. He has experience growing businesses both organically and through acquisition, managing development, marketing and operations, and serving diverse customers from small businesses to the Fortune 500. ”

I’m just a guy who uses the product, but it seems like the Avid Board of Directors went out and got a guy who can do two things:

    1) Find money from investors, or
    2) Find someone to merge with.

I’m gonna take #2, and say that Avid will be in the Harris booth at NAB this spring.

    That would make Arris? Havid?

I think they should take the plunge and go with Hairvid.

The fact of the matter is that Avid has lost their focus. The problem has been that they have been in acquisition mode and not focusing on their core products.

How many more years will it take for them to, for instance, fix the QuickTime Import and Export so that colors are accurately converted? Heck, why fight city hall? Why not support it natively in the timeline along with their other media formats?

How many more times will they lie to customers about how and when they are going to open up the platform? XML? I’m having flashbacks of the old Quantel.

P.S. Dan, Happy Holidays. I hope the family is doing well.

My guess goes to this is the end.
I have seen no signs that point to their wanting to be around in the years to come. Putting sales managers as brand managers is a great step toward closing up shop and lieing to their customers ensures it.
With every new tie-wearer we have seen come and go at Avid, we have all gotten giddy, hoping this would be a turning point. The turning point happend 3 years ago and it will not be reversed.
I imagine we’ll have something with an Avid name on it next year and it will be offered on Adobe’s website.

    REPLY –
we should all be so lucky. Imagine Adobe abandons Premier, and all new Adobe Production Studio systems come with Adobe Media Composer – all supported by AJA and Blackmagic hardware. Keep dreaming.

It’s all kind of sad – just like CMX was sad at the end.
