Hi Justin,
Every time you change the graphics (like buttons) and/or text that are overlaid on your background video, you must render the motion menu so that the changed graphics and text can be composited over each frame of the bg video.

Button layers need to be in a layer set. The layer set needs the (+) prefix. If you are doing highlight-only buttons, all you will need in the button layer set is a subpicture layer. The subpicture layer needs the (=1) prefix. Don’t add any anti-aliasing, effects or styles to the subpicture layer because the color palette for the subpicture highlight can’t handle it.

It’s not possible using just the subpicture highlight, but it is possible using multiple duplicate menus and the auto-activate properties of buttons to get a sort of roll-over effect. The gradients and colors would be applied to the button graphic layers, not the subpicture layer(s).

You should be able to do what you wanted. It works on my system. Each chapter has an end action that returns the audience to a menu, and the Chapter Playlist that you created serves as a Play All function.
Since you can’t get Encore to do that on your system, try this:
Delete all of the end actions for all of the chapters in the main timeline. Then make a separate Chapter Playlist for each chapter of the main timeline (except for the last chapter – let it play so that the timeline’s end action can execute). Set the end action of each Chapter Playlist and the end action of the timeline to return to the previous menu. Link the menu buttons to the playlists.
You should be OK as long as you don’t go over about 18 or 19 Chapter Playlists from one timeline.

You make the complete animation (including the freeze of the last frame and the visible button graphics that will appear over it) as a video in another application like After Effects or Premiere Pro. Let the video hold on the last frame (with button graphics) for a while. 30 seconds to a minute is not unreasonable.
Then:
1. Add your video as a background to a blank menu in Encore.
2. Make your menu buttons “highlight only”. All button graphics are already part of the video background.
3. Set the loop point for the motion menu to the point in the video where the button graphics appear and you want the audience to be able to activate the buttons. The button highlights will not be visible until the loop point is reached.
4. When the end of the animation is reached (30 seconds to a minute later), the menu background video will loop. When it loops, it will loop to the loop point timecode that you set. This prevents the intro animation from playing again.
5. If you don’t want the menu to loop forever, set the number of loops.
6. If you need the audience to be able to return to this menu, create a duplicate that doesn’t contain the intro animation.-Jeff

Turn off the Synch Button Text and Name button property for each button after you finish designing your buttons and before you start linking them to content.
Make sure to go to the Adobe web site and file a feature request to allow the user to choose whether SBTAN is on/off by default.
