Agreed that would be an awesome feature request. One suggestion that was made to me was to duplicate the bin and then move the clips around from the duplicate bin. Tedious, but possible.

One method I’ve employed over the years is to partition my working drive or RAID in order to keep things separated. So if you have a project with footage you shot, graphics, and music or VO, make a partition for each one as you see fit and make sure to import media to the right volume upon ingest. It’s really easy to unmount media later and move it around knowing the right stuff is in the right place.

Additionally, this makes AMA re-linking easy by just unmounting a volume with your low res media and pointing your sequence to relink to a different volume.

Strange — I’m on 10.9.5 Mavericks and also have Desktop Video 10.1.1 drivers installed for my Blackmagic Intensity Pro card. All is well so far. Haven’t cut a full new project on this system yet, but have done minor edits and many exports. All seems well so far (knocking on wood).

It’s for this reason I keep a dual boot with 10.7.5 hanging around. I held on to a copy of Leopard 10.5 until just last week!!

Wanted to share that Desktop Video 10.1.1 seems to have solved this issue.

May 4, 2014 at 1:38 pm in reply to: Best DNX codec for mastering

    Miguel,

I went through this dilemma recently on a job. We shot 50 mbit MPEG-2 4:2:2 on a Canon C300 (1080 @ 23.976 fps) and transcoded to DNX 80 with the thought of NOT doing an uprez to anything higher. I did this on a show last year with material shot on a Canon 7D and everything worked out fine. No QC kickbacks. But I have thought, with the C300 if going higher to 175 would make any noticeable difference.

I ran this test by re linking to AMA files and re transcoding, then did a comparison in Photoshop between 175x, 80, and 36.

I won’t say there is no difference between 80 and 175x. But it is only perceptible to the eye with 4x or 8x blow up of the image. There is some finer pixel-to-pixel detail that can be seen from that vantage. Mainly in noisier low-light areas. But, overall, at 1-to-1, I could not tell the difference. I would encourage you to run your own test similar to this because it probably varies depending on the source material. It also depends on who you are delivering to I suppose. If your client is stringent on quality, maybe hedge your bets by doing the up res. But if it’s not going to be a big deal, the lower end may be just fine.

My apologies for the mis-info — I assumed it was Adrenaline but it is in fact a Nitris DX box we’re working with. And, yes, we’re 64-bit on Mac OS X Lion.

February 6, 2013 at 11:23 pm in reply to: Noise and the ultimate export

Just to piggy back on this thread — I am a recent convert from FCP to Avid and one of the things I’m really missing is my Neat Video plugin. Does anyone have a good workflow for cutting and finishing in Media Composer, but sending consolidated media over to FCP (with edits in tact) to do a noise reduction pass?

I have Automatic Duck and haven’t yet tested using it to import an AAF with consolidated media — but I’m thinking this might be the way to go? Any ideas are appreciated!

    Best,
    JD

John, you’re a psychic — yes I’m using a Decklink Studio 2 card. Not sure which driver I’m using at the moment, but it’s probably not the latest. I will update. Thanks so much for the help!

Thanks for the suggestions guys — I will try doing the batch export from Photoshop to see if that has any success. I suppose keeping everything RGB would be the safest.
