Rob, thanks for your suggestion. I checked, but the compressor is set to DVCPro HD 720p60. And as I mentioned, the problem persists when a title comes up, even over a DVCPro HD 720p60 clip. I’ll try ProRes as an experiment.

Hey Phil and Raphael,
Many thanks! Now I don’t only know how to fix it, but have two ways to do so. Much appreciated!

Got it! Thanks for your help Ray.

ooops… my previous post concerns a carry case for the HVX200 not HDX900! Sorry.

When I rented an HD1200a I had the same problem. I was tearing my hair out (none left now) but eventually a Panasonic tech support person led me to the obscure menu setting that for some reason I could not find on my own. Try calling Panasonic and they will probably solve it with you.

Obviously using a camcorder to capture from is a temporary solution or a backup. But with all due respect Tony, it should be the purchaser’s decision whether or not to use that feature. The fact is that Panasonic advertises the ability to capture from the HDX900 via firewire. The 1400 deck is over 20K. Panasonic’s marketing plan seems to recognize that some people may be able to purchase a camcorder one year, but need to wait a bit before spending another hefty sum. Otherwise they would not have incorporated and advertised this feature. So there is no misconception here, just different needs. The “proper thing” is what an individual decides is proper for his/her own needs. My point, and I only make it because I am astonished that Panasonic seems to be misleading in their advertising, is that the HDX900 firewire capture feature should do what most people would assume such a feature should do. And that includes deck control.

Interesting discussion. But has anyone compared the 330/350 to Panasonic’s HDX900? That is a much more balanced comparison price wise than HDV or the HVX200. The HDX900 has 2/3 inch imagers, records 4 channels of uncompressed audio, uses tape (not P2 cards), can shoot 1080i, 720p with lots of frame rates including 24p. Of course it records in a DVCPRO HD codec which is beautiful and when editing on FCP is rock solid. You can capture clips using firewire but without deck control (capture now). With viewfinder and a pre-packaged Fujinon HD lens (not the greatest) it will cost you about 35K. 10K less without lens. You have the pluses and minuses of tape and the softer, yet gorgeous look of native 720 progressive imagers. I have not been able to do a side by side with the HDX900 and an XDCAM (using the same lens is only possible with the 2/3 inch adapter for the XDCAM) but would love to hear from someone who did.

Is this possible? No deck control via firewire? Panasonic advertises that you can capture right from the camera with firewire. I have been at demos held by Panasonic reps and mentioned my short term interest (until I can afford a deck) in capturing directly from the camera and NO ONE said that would be a problem. So am I to understand that one has to do a “capture now” in order to get material in from the camera?

John, thanks for your advice. The DVDs I have been playing back on the plasma display are recent–including a SD down conversion of an 8-camera Varicam show I recently did–but do not fill the screen without distortion. These same DVDs do fill the screen on my SD JVC plasma display. Again, I am coming into the display analogue component. And yes, I have no doubt that an HD clip will fill the screen properly. I tried this with a Sony Z1 and it looked stunning and filled the screen without stretching or magnification. So the issue for me is just with SD DVDs. Any other suggestions or observations?
