I bought a new MacBook Pro 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running OS X 10.6.1 with 4 GB ram and am using FCP 6.0.6 along with a G-Tech 3TB G-Raid connecting with a Sonnet Tempo Sata Pro Expresscard/34.

The problem is that the same project that played just fine on my older MacBook Pro with only 2 GB Ram, is now stopping (intermittently, but more often than not) when it gets to a clip that has the green bar indicating it can be played in real time but needs to be rendered for full quality. This is especially the case with lower thirds and other titles. The sequence is in DVCPro HD 720p60 format but has a good many HDV 1080i60 clips as well. It is these clips (and titles, as I previously mentioned) that stop the sequence from playing with the warning that I need faster drives or should turn off real time effects, have few open windows, etc. I have the minimum tracks and windows open that I need to edit the project. The problem persists if I connect with FW800, but the e-sata connection and raided drive should really not pose a problem.

Why is my newer MacBook Pro having a harder time than my older one? How can I edit my project without constant interruptions?

hmm…I wonder if it’s your sequence settings. Your computer is probably trying to reconstruct the Long GOP compression structure of the HDV footage. What is the compressor set to in your timeline settings? Maybe try setting it to DVCProHD or ProRes

Rob, thanks for your suggestion. I checked, but the compressor is set to DVCPro HD 720p60. And as I mentioned, the problem persists when a title comes up, even over a DVCPro HD 720p60 clip. I’ll try ProRes as an experiment.
