I work all the time over 2 machines (separated by about 200km so no network here) and Arnie is correct. You need to have IDENTICAL media on each machine. FCP, if you then send a sequence from one to another (either via a project file or via XML) will (with a little promting from you) fine and relink media.
To make this work well:
Log and capture on one machine only. Copy media and project to your second/third…machine.
Ensure that the version of FCP is the same – ideally same OS, same FCP and QT.
Try to make each machine the same – media drives named identically, file structure for organising media identical – and if not, make sure YOU know YOUR machine so when it comes to relinking you can do it without confusion.
If media is added to one machine (for instance graphics) you need to ensure that the others have the same media in the same place on their hard drives.
FCP doesn’t have tha database strength that Avid has – so you need to do some of the work. If you’re organised and methodical, the sharing of projects like this should pose no problems.

Make sure you get the Intuos – the cheaper Graphire and Bamboos are OK for occasional use but you won’t put it down once you’ve got the hang of it.
Have a look at eBay – lots of secondhand Aerons there, might save a packet (though they are VERY cheap in the States compared with the UK – we pay around $1800 for a new basic chair!!)
Further to Stevens suggestion, if youhave a partner buy them a massage course. Convince them that a weekly session is essential for any editor and standard practise across the industry… well you can try can’t you?

has some interesting stuff on. Particularly regarding colourspace calibration – their review of the Sony Bravia 40×3500 (called summat else your side of the pond) certainly hints at the possibility that it will accurately display the REC709 colour gamut.
I’m tempted, because SWMBO won’t have a giant screen in the house – but an LCD that I can use in the suite and bring inside for ‘screenings’ of those just bought DVD’s would be lovely… not that they’re exactly portable though…

Yup, as per instructions… funny thing is it works fine when it does work, if you see what I mean. I’ve checked for loose connections – were running a KL Box too, but everything seems OK there.
One thing – when I have rebooted the machine prior to it working, I’ve run the AJA Control Panel before launching FCP. Could anything within FCP ‘disable’ the card?

Aeron chairs – brilliant. I have two, bought second-hand off eBay after all the dotcoms realised that the money they spent on fancy furniture could’ve kept a small nation afloat for a year. Their loss and all that.
Anyway, can’t fault them, very comfortable – the only snag is they’re a bit heavy to take from job to job, so I only do that if I’m there for a fortnight or more. Built like tanks too.
Kneeler chairs are OK, if you spend a lot on a good one. Avoid the cheapo ones, they tend not to be designed as ‘ergonomically’.
I had the beginnings of RSI earlier this year – worrying as it really stopped me from being able to work. It was surprising how painful holding a mouse was. I bought a Wacom tablet (Intuos A6 Wide) and along with my chair it has been one of the best purchases I made. It’ really is IMHO a no-brainer. Once you’ve used one you’ll never want to go back to the mouse.

OK, after a morning of no joy, I obviously prostrated myself under the edit desk enough times to appease the Gods of Video Hardware as, for no apparent reason (i.e no cause and effect that I could fathom) it’s started working again. Ho hum.
So, moral – if all else fails, crawl under the desk and wait awhile. Worked for me.

It sounds like you are a little out of your depth on this one. To answer your question, no you cannot use your Z1 and FCP to convert NTSC HDV to PAL DV in anything like an acceptable manner. A broadcaster (at least, any worthy of the title) would reject it out of hand.
However – and I’m not trying to be funny or sarcastic here – if they’re happy for you to edit it, and from your post you have little or no editing experience, their standards may be lower. You need to find out what their expectations are.
As to the issue of standards conversion – using a stand-alone hardware converter (and I DON’T mean one of the 100 dollar ebay ones) will yeild the best results. It will cost though. Assuming the broadcaster you are editing for is paying for this, you should be able to charge accordingly.
A cheaper way to approach it, whilst still yielding excellent results, would be to buy Graeme Nattress’ Standards Converter plug-in at about $100. It is excellent, but will take a while to render. It’s workflow is also a little unusual but nothing too taxing if you RTFM. If you used this I would
1. Cut NTSC HDV to picture lock and audio mix
2. Copy edit in to a new sequence, 4:3 Standard Def – this should give you a letterboxed 4:3 sequence
3. Output as a self contained QT
4. Import this movie in to a new project in FCP (PAL DV Easy setup) and use to create PAL copy with the Nattress converter
5. Print to tape on your Z1 set up for PAL.If you don’t understand this process, I humbly suggest you are out of your depth; for the sake of your project, get a pro in to help you. You’ll learn loads and won’t get a bad rep from your broadcaster. FWIW.
