Looks good to me though I’d need to see how it behaved sitting ‘behind’ FCP for realtime monitoring. Fortunately I have PPMs but I could see this replacing them if they work well…

Oh, one thing I forgot to add – the MBPro, working as it does direct in to the PCIexpress slots, has no detectable latency – something I really like. It’s a very snappy, responsive editing experience and a world away from the Io (not HD) that I cut on not so long ago.

I’ve just installed a Multibridge Pro form Blackmagic. I looked long and hard at the AJA, but in the end could not justify the price hike (£2.5k vs. £1k in the UK) for the limited extra functionality.
So far, so good. It appears to be a well built unit, maybe not quite as well built as the AJA line but fine (for instance AJA use Neutrik XLR sockets whereas the BM unit has non- branded ones).
It worked straight out of the box (after an RTFM* moment on my part) and seems great – integrates seamlessly with Color, FCP et al and does 99% of what I need it to. It maybe isn’t as slick a product as AJA – for instance the AJA control panel is quite funky, whereas the BM controls are part of the system preferences and somewhat simpler – but it does what it needs to do and no more. I can still up/down/cross convert, though I haven’t had the opportunity to test this in a real world scenario yet. Now BM offer a 3 year warranty I’m quite happy with my purchase. Some say that AJA tech support is better – I think maybe that depends on where you are. This side of the pond there seems to be little in it.

Absolutely – I’d never scale in FCP, unless using a 3rd party scaler. I was more thinking of the ingest route – Kona3/IOHD or, in my case, Multibridge Pro.
Seems like the client is happy to stay SD throughout, anyway.

I’m running a 3-drive RAID0 stripe internally at the moment. Fine for ProRes HD. Ideally I would have an external array but needs must at the moment. If you go for an internal, don’t pay Apples’ over-inflated price for drives – installing the drives into the caddies is a 10 minute job. The only gotcha is to remember that some SATA drives have jumpers to switch between SATA1 and 2 modes – you need to make sure that 2 is activated in order to get the full 300mb/sec. Get good drives from a reputable online store and you’ll save mucho $$$…

Seconded. You’ll be amazed at the difference – I’ve just done the upgrade. Motion and Color are both smoooth!
You only realize what a mother of a card this is when you get it out of the packet and place it alongside the stock one. Whoever said size isn’t everything was wrong, sooo wrong!!
Seriously, it is a worthwhile (almost essential) upgrade.

I would take a long hard look at the Sony monitor. I’ve seen them and been less than impressed, and the general opinion puts them somewhere between average to useless. I’d go for a decent second hand SD CRT any day. If you’re wedded to LCD, the JVC 24 and 20 inch models get a good rating for the money.

Graeme Natress’ excellent Chroma Smoother filter can be very effective if you’re integrating DV – it does smooth the image well. I find it’s often DVs handling of colour that gives the game away. Combine this with the 3-way CC and you may find it is a bit more acceptable, IMHO…

I’ve been looking in to this too. Some monitors (notably the Sony X3500 series in the UK) can, when calibrated, get extremely close to the REC 709 HD colour standard. Likewise 601 for SD. So, with that in mind, I’d look to your local ISF Calibrator who will (or should) know a) what monitors get closest to REC709 and b) how much it will cost to calibrate one in-house.
